Those of you hoping to see Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage fight in the next few months have just gotten a fatality. Mortal Kombat II, which originally had a scheduled release date of October 24 of this year, will move forward nearly seven months to May 15, 2026. This comes according to The Hollywood Reporter. It definitely seemed quite soon for the sequel to 2021’s reboot. Soon in the sense that we just had the first trailer a little over a month ago. New Line is hoping to see similar success with a mid-May release that they achieved with this year’s Final Destination: Bloodlines.

The Mortal Kombat reboot film came out at the height of mid-pandemic mixed release. So in addition to theatrical, it also hit HBO Max nearly instantly. Adapting the uber-violent fighting game juggernaut, the movie starred Lewis Tan as Cole Young, a fighter entering into a mystical tournament. Joining him were game characters Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Kano (Josh Lawson), and others. The film boasted action stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Joe Taslim, and Tadanobu Asano as Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden, respectively.

The biggest name addition for the sequel is the aforementioned Karl Urban as movie star-turned-warrior Johnny Cage. Other new characters include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Martyn Ford as Shao Khan, and CJ Bloomfield as Baraka.

Mortal Kombat II will get ready to fight for box office glory May 15, 2026.
