Netflix drops 'Operation Varsity Blues' trailer about college admissions scandal

It is a little ironic that Netflix unveiled the Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal trailer on the same day the streamer found itself in the center a Taylor Swift-induced controversy.

Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal will land on Netflix March 17. The official description of the documentary brings the enticing elements from the 2019 college admissions scandal back to the forefront:

"Using an innovative combination of interviews and narrative recreations of the FBI’s wiretapped conversations between [Rick] Singer and his clients, Operation Varsity Blues offers a rare glimpse into the enigmatic figure behind a scheme that exposed the lengths wealthy families would go to for admission into elite colleges, and angered a nation already grappling with the effects of widespread inequality."

The reenacted portions will feature Matthew Modine as Singer, the mastermind behind it all. Singer pled guilty to racketeering, money laundering, conspiracy to defraud and obstruction of justice after he was exposed for taking money from parents then using it to bribe athletic coaches or pay for SAT proctors. The total amount paid to Singer by wealthy parents seeking admission into elite universities such as Stanford, UCLA, USC or Yale reportedly reached $25 million.

The scheme gained even more traction because of Full House actress Lori Laughlin and Desperate Housewives actress Felicity Huffman's participation. Huffman served 11 days of a two-week prison sentence last October, while Loughlin was released from a two-month sentence in late December. Loughlin's husband, famed designer Mossimo Giannulli, is still serving a five-month sentence.

Operation Varsity Blues was produced by Chris Smith, known for directing Fyre and executive-producing Tiger King, and John Karmen.
