Netflix Quietly Adding Iconic High School Comedy Movie

Netflix is adding more than two dozen movies to its library this weekend, including a legendary teen comedy that has stood up ever since its release 31 years ago.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, Clueless is coming to Netflix. Amy Heckerling's 1995 box office smash was recently named one of the greatest high school movies ever.

Clueless is timeless

Released on July 19, 1995, Clueless centered around Cher Horowitz, played by Alicia Silverstone. Other major roles include Dionne Davenport (Stacey Dash), Cher's best friend, newcomer Tai Frazier (Brittany Murphy), who is the subject of Cher's makeover project, and Josh Lucas (Paul Rudd), Cher's ex-step brother turned love interest.

A loaded cast also includes Donald Faison, Dan Hedaya, Jeremy Sisto, Justin Walker, Breckin Meyer, Wallace Shawn, Twink Caplan and Julie Brown.

Loosely based off Jane Austen's 1815 novel Emma, Clueless owns an 82% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It has also served as an inspiration across pop culture over the last three decades and spawned a spin-off television series.

An all-time classic

In 2025, Entertainment Weekly named Clueless the No. 7 high school movie of all time, ahead of prominent films such as Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Election.

"It's a rare movie that makes you want to befriend the prettiest, most popular girl in school," Entertainment Weekly wrote. "But not all girls are Cher (Alicia Silverstone), who gets as many killer lines as fashion ensembles; learns that seeing the best in others is a way to better yourself; and discovers the joy of shopping with a well-dressed gay man (Justin Walker) — all at the ripe age of 15. Credit writer-director Amy Heckerling for making this modern-day interpretation of Jane Austen's Emma consistently smart and funny."

Variety also praised Heckerling for her attention to detail when it ranked Clueless as the No. 39 comedy movie of all time last year.

“But what sets Clueless apart from other ’90s teen comedies is how clued in Heckerling was to the actual dynamics of young adults of the era. She studied students at Beverly Hills High to master their slang (“Audi,” “buggin’,” “Betty,” “whatever!”) to create a pop-culture time capsule,” Variety wrote.

“And Silverstone takes a bubble-gum-twirling ditz and invests her with such nuance that anyone can relate to her plight, whether it’s learning to drive or owning her feelings for her ex-stepbrother (Paul Rudd).”
