Netflix renews Kate Hudson's "Running Point," cancels "The Recruit"

It's a classic good news/bad news situation here. We'll begin with the bad news. Netflix has canceled "The Recruit" after two seasons. The spy drama starred Netflix golden boy Noah Centineo (of "To All the Boys" fame) as a CIA lawyer dealing with, you know, classic spy drama stuff. While the second season seemed to land reasonably well when it debuted earlier this year, a third season was not ordered by the streaming behemoth.

Now, for the good news. Netflix's basketball comedy "Running Point," which stars Kate Hudson as the president of basketball team after a familial scandal, only debuted on February 27. It's already been picked up for a second season.

While the show was co-created by Mindy Kaling, "Running Point" is also notable for having Jeannie Buss and her friend Linda Rambis on as executive producers. The show is "based on" Buss' experience as the president of the Los Angeles Laker, a role she began after the death of her father Jerry. Also, apparently she's married to Jay Mohr? Anyway, Jeannie Buss has always been PR forward, so it isn't terribly surprising that there is now a Netflix show that is to some degree about bolstering her legacy and public image.

In short, congratulations to "Running Point" fans (and to Jeannie Buss) and condolences to "The Recruit" fans.
