Netflix reportedly snags multi-part Kanye West documentary

Kanye West mostly keeps to himself—Twitter outbursts aside—but fans are about to get closer to Ye than ever through an unnamed Netflix project due later this year.

The news comes from Billboard's Frank DiGiacomo: "A multi-part documentary featuring never-before-seen home videos and other rare footage of Kanye West is coming to Netflix in 2021 via two music-video and filmmakers who have been chronicling the artist-turned-billionaire entrepreneur's life and work for more than 20 years."

DiGiacomo additionally reports that the docuseries sold to Netflix "for upwards of $30 million" from Clarence "Coodie" Simmons and Chike Ozah, who jointly directed West's "Jesus Walks" and "Through the Wire" music videos.

More from DiGiacomo:

"Another source says Simmons has been filming West since the 1990s in Chicago, and their relationship will serve as the backbone of the documentary series, which will tell the story of the rapper and producer's rise to success and fame's impact on him as well hip-hop's impact on popular culture and the world's evolving relationship with celebrity.

"Using never-before-seen footage and home videos, the second source says the series will also deal with the death of West's mother, Donda West, and the impact it had on the rapper; his personal evolution in recent years; his successful move into fashion design and his unsuccessful run for President in 2020. It's unclear, however, whether the series will also chronicle West's 2021 divorce from Kim Kardashian."

West has become a cultural icon for reasons away from the mic—Forbes estimates his net worth to be $1.8 billion primarily from his Yeezy partnership with Adidas—so it's easy to forget that the 43-year-old is a 22-time Grammy winner, including a quiet claim to best contemporary Christian music album (Jesus Is King) at last month's 63rd Grammy Awards. He has been nominated by the Recording Academy an eye-popping 70 times.

West became an undeniable force in music through his first three studio albums: The College Dropout (2004), Late Registration (2005) and Graduation (2007). That trilogy birthed eternal smashes such as "Jesus Walks," "Gold Digger" featuring Jamie Foxx—which remains West's only No. 1 Hot 100 hit—"Stronger" and "Can't Tell Me Nothing."

The father of four continued to push the envelop with 808s & Heartbreak (2008) and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010):

In more recent years, despite the release of 2016's The Life of Pablo and 2018's Ye—West's musical prominence has taken a back seat in the public eye to his eye for fashion and personal conflicts.

The Life of Pablo Tour was cut short in November 2016 as West was suffering from a mental breakdown and was subsequently admitted to the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital Center. He was then diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2017, then discussed it at length with David Letterman in 2019.

Most recently, in February, Kardashian West filed for divorce from her husband of seven years.

Eyes have been fixed on West's every move for nearly two decades, but this documentary would provide fans with a rare glimpse into the man himself's shifting perspectives.
