For those of a certain age, it’s hard to imagine a world without cyberpunk. The genre has been a ubiquitous part of the pop culture landscape for forty years. And yet, despite countless movies, shows, comics, games, and more, the novel that helped launch cyberpunk has never been brought to life. Until now. Apple TV+ is adapting William Gibson’s iconic 1984 sci-fi novel, Neuromancer, the book many cite as the beginning of the genre, into a 10-episode series. And fans who have waited decades to see it onscreen can relax. It truly is happening. The show has officially begun production.
You can check out the brief, but exciting, teaser trailer for the Neuromancer series below.
Get ready to pull up a chair at Chatsubo. Apple TV+ released an “in production” trailer celebrating the official start of shooting on Neuromancer. Apple TV+ noted it shared this news on July 1 because that’s the publishing anniversary of Gibson’s dystopian novel.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Neuromancer “follows a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high-stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”
The Apple TV+ Neuromancer series will star Callum Turner (Masters of the Air) as Case. Briana Middleton (The Silent Planet) will play Molly. The cast also includes Joseph Lee, Mark Strong, Cleménce Poésy, Peter Sarsgaard, Emma Laird, Dane DeHaan, André De Shields, Max Irons, and Marc Menchaca. Showrunner Graham Roland (Jack Ryan, Dark Winds) created the show with JD Dillard (The Outsider, Sleight). Dillard is also directing the first episode of Neuromancer.
While Apple TV+ has yet to set a premiere date for Neuromancer, this teaser trailer means a Neuromancer adaptation really is finally happening. And if the show is a hit, it could lead to the streaming site bringing all of Gibson’s Sprawl novel trilogy to life. If that happens, it’ll be hard to imagine a world when cyberpunk’s first novel didn’t even have its own adaptation. We can’t wait to see more from the Neuromancer series very soon.
