Countless fictional families have entertained us through the years, including the iconic Addams Family. They are the collection of creeps and kooks intrigued with strangeness, darkness, and death. And despite their ghoulish vibes, they have a strong appreciation for family. Think of the Munsters, but with a slightly edgier tone and mostly humans.
The Addams Family has appeared in countless forms of entertainment since their grand debut. Now they’re doing it again in a future film by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. They are the creators of the black comedy series centered around Wednesday Addams. But what do we know about this eventual movie already?
The Addams Family consists of the enamoured husband and wife, Gomez and Morticia Addams. With them are their children, Wednesday and Pugsley, and their Frankenstein-esque butler, Lurch. Additional family members include Grandmama, Uncle Fester, Cousin Itt, and the living disembodied hand Thing. And they all reside within a domicile that gives off haunted mansion vibes.
This family of macabre eccentrics first appeared in a late 1930s New Yorker comic strip. They eventually crawled their way into television, starring in the iconic 1964 sitcom. From there came a Hanna-Barbera cartoon that once crossed over with Scooby-Doo. And live-action movies such as the two starring Angelica Huston and Raul Julia. Afterward came more shows, movies, books, video games, and even a Broadway musical.
Nowadays, the Addams Family has slowed their media appearances to a near-death halt. What we typically only have now are the animated films produced by MGM Studios. And the highly popular live-action Netflix program, Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega. However, it appears we are getting something new set for a later date.
Recent news revealed that a new Addams Family movie is in the works. And it’s being made by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the co-creators of Wednesday. The pair announced this film would be animated, rebooting the current cartoon flicks. They also made a point to mention that it won’t connect to Wednesday.
Another thing these creators divulged was that they’re making the movie with Amazon MGM Studios. Gough even stated they are collaborating with renowned producers Gail Berman and Johnathan Glickman. And Kevin Miserocchi, the head of the Addams Foundation, is offering his help. Unfortunately, this is all they could reveal since the film is still in early development. We’ll have to wait for a future update for further details.
I’m honestly intrigued by this new Addams Family movie despite the lack of prominent information. Part of me hopes it follows the aura of the films from 1991 and 1993. Nevertheless, it’ll be intriguing to see what direction this eventual feature takes. But I am hoping for something a little darker than the recent animated flicks.
That aspect seems likely if the minds behind Wednesday are in charge. I haven’t seen the show, though, maybe now I will in response to this news. It could give me an idea of what to expect despite the two being unrelated. Either way, I might have to check out this movie once it hits theaters.
