Helluva Boss fans everywhere are rejoicing today because the new short is out! To recap, the show stars Blitzø and his employees at the Immediate Murder Professionals company. Their job is to go to Earth and assassinate targets assigned to them by sinners. When not on the clock, they tackle personal issues and their various rivals and enemies.
The shorts, also known as Helluva Shorts, showcase a different side of I.M.P.’s lives. However, most installments feature the characters going on missions to Earth and taking out targets. They basically give everyone a glimpse at what the show was originally going to be. This recent short focuses on I.M.P.’s weapons expert, Moxxie, going on a solo mission. But what exactly happened during his excursion, and did he succeed in killing his target?
In this brand-new Helluva Boss short, Moxxie takes a solo assignment to assassinate a criminal. The target is Paulie, the son of a notorious mafia leader named Luigi. Moxxie’s mission begins as he witnesses Luigi berating his son for committing a horrible act. Moxxie, sympathizing with his target, agrees to help Paulie escape from his life of crime. Unfortunately, their first attempt ends in the death of three rival mobsters.
Moxxie begins thinking of another plan when Luigi comes in to confront his son. He reveals the opposing mafia family wants Paulie dead, but agrees to sacrifice himself. Paulie celebrates since his father’s death means he’ll be in charge. His callous attitude angers Moxxie, pushing the imp to kill him at last. Afterward, Moxxie returns home and shares a wholesome leech dinner with Millie.
All Helluva Boss fans know that Moxxie possesses a mafia past. And the organization he was a part of was run by his father, Crimson. Crimson is known for being vicious, cunning, opportunistic, manipulative, and ignorant. His crimes include, but are not limited to, extortion, murder, and kidnapping. He’s also known to be a horrible father to his only child.
During the short’s climax, Moxxie realized just how horrible his father really is. He confessed he assumed Crimson was the way he was because of the mobster lifestyle. Seeing Luigi willingly sacrifice himself and express fatherly love towards Paulie, however, changed that view. Now, Moxxie understands that Crimson didn’t have to be the way he was. He likely chose to be the vile individual his son knows today.
Quite the heartbreaking revelation for this otherwise fun miniature episode to end on. Yet it can bring some additional emotional weight to the main series. If so, Moxxie and Crimson’s next confrontation is indeed to be a crazy one.
This Helluva Boss short is definitely one of the best we’ve gotten yet! It starts with the series’ signature humor before gut-punching you with the feels. I especially liked how Paulie and Luigi were somewhat dressed as Moxxie and Crimson, respectively. It really helps sell the mirror image between the two father-son pairs. I also adored the cute exchange between Moxxie and Millie as the credits rolled.
Honestly, this newest Helluva Short should have been a full episode. It could’ve been the ideal redemption performance for Moxxie after his one in Unhappy Campers. And I would’ve liked to witness the buddy B-plot involving Blitzø and Millie. Still, this mission-centered story is a top-tier installment worthy of the fandom’s admiration. Let’s hope we continue seeing this incredible quality after Helluva Boss moves to Amazon Prime.
