Musical biopics get a bad rap for being formulaic, so Pharrell Williams decided to get creative and flip the genre with Piece by Piece, a new movie that will tell his story through LEGO.
The first trailer has landed, blowing all expectations out of the water.
Directed by the Oscar-winning Morgan Neville, Piece by Piece tells the story of Pharrell Williams, showing his imaginative and creative process using LEGO as he constructs models representing his artistic development. Each build reflects a different creative milestone.
Universal and Focus Features have described the film as "a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience about one of music's most innovative minds".
The all-star cast includes voice performances from Gwen Stefani, Kendrick Lamar, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, and Snoop Dogg.
The trailer previews the film's stars with a meta introduction from Pharrell and director Morgan Neville in LEGO form, with Pharrell saying, "You know what would be cool? Is if we told my story with LEGO pieces".
We swing right into the story with Pharrell's signature song, "Happy", underneath the action that throws us all the way back to the singer's childhood, where he was deemed "an odd child".
We learn about Pharrell's origin story of becoming a musician but starting by producing other tracks before someone finally gave him a chance to show off his talent as an artist.
Piece by Piece will feature new music from Pharrell Williams and will release in theaters on October 11.
