HBO Max will enter September with a lineup built for the beginning of fall. The month brings major returning series, new HBO originals, true crime programming and enough horror movies to help viewers start Halloween season several weeks early.
“The Gilded Age” returns for its fourth season as one of the service’s biggest prestige dramas. The historical series has steadily expanded its collection of powerful families, ambitious social climbers and old money rivalries. Its latest chapter should give HBO another awards contender after “The Pitt,” “The Comeback” and “Hacks” earned recognition ahead of the 2026 Emmys.
The new “Harry Potter” series also promises to command plenty of attention. The television adaptation gives HBO Max more room to explore the characters, locations and storylines from J.K. Rowling’s novels than the movies could fit into their running times. That makes the series both a fresh entry point and a major nostalgia play.
Meanwhile, “Lanterns” will continue its Sunday rollout after premiering in August. New episodes will carry the DC mystery through September and into its October 4 conclusion, IGN reports.
HBO Max wastes little time establishing a spooky mood. The enormous September 1 collection includes “Carrie,” “Misery,” “The Craft,” “Interview with the Vampire” and “Talk to Me.” Viewers can also revisit the first two “Final Destination” movies before jumping ahead to “The Final Destination.”
The strongest mini marathon belongs to Ti West’s horror trilogy. “Pearl” and “MaXXXine” both join the service on September 1, giving subscribers two bloody showcases for Mia Goth. “Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare,” “Men” and both “Zombieland” films add different flavors of fear, from supernatural curses to psychological horror and zombie comedy.
The month’s biggest film arrival comes later. A24’s “Backrooms,” one of 2026’s most successful theatrical horror releases, begins streaming September 25. Its arrival should make it a natural choice for viewers looking to enter Halloween season with something new.
September also offers plenty outside the horror genre. “A Clockwork Orange,” “Full Metal Jacket,” “Eyes Wide Shut” and “The Shining” director Stanley Kubrick receive significant representation. Other notable films include “Birdman,” “Magnolia,” “Rain Man,” “The Revenant,” “Saltburn” and “The Last Samurai.”
The original slate stretches across several genres. “Collision” premieres September 7, while “A Killer Story” follows three days later. “JAŸ-Z In 8” arrives September 18, and the HBO Original “Youth” debuts September 20.
True crime viewers can watch “OJ Unseen: Exploitation of Evil,” “Toxic” and “Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos.” Food Network begins its seasonal programming with new seasons of “Halloween Wars” and “Halloween Baking Championship.” HGTV, TLC, Discovery and Cartoon Network round out a deep schedule that should keep new programming flowing throughout the month.
