Nia DaCosta's 'Hedda' starring Tessa Thompson gets October release date

Nia DaCosta's Hedda is having its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival, which will run from September 4 to September 14.

From Nia DaCosta comes a provocative, modern reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play. HEDDA (Tessa Thompson) finds herself torn between the lingering ache of a past love and the quiet suffocation of her present life. Over the course of one charged night, long-repressed desires and hidden tensions erupt—pulling her and everyone around her into a spiral of manipulation, passion, and betrayal.

The film is based on the 1891 stage play Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen and stars Tessa Thompson, Imogen Poots, Tom Bateman, Nicholas Pinnock, and Nina Hoss. Thompson also serves as a producer alongside Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Gabrielle Nadig, and DaCosta.

"I called my team, and I said that I need to make Hedda," the writer/director told Deadline. "I had written it years ago and I said that I really needed to go back to that because this isn’t fulfilling in the way I need it to be."

DaCosta and Thompson previously worked together on Neon's Little Woods, which came out in 2018. In an interview with SAGindie to discuss the project, she explained, "Tessa and I met at the Directors Lab in 2015, actually. She came out to help workshop it with two other actors, including Luke Kirby, who’s also in the film. So we met pretty early on in the process, pretty much at the very beginning of that development period. We just fell in love and fell in love with this project together and a week in I was like, 'Do you want to do this movie?' And she was like, 'Yeah!' [Laughs] So that was awesome. And then, of course, she exploded."

The creative team for Hedda includes music by Hildur Gudnadottir, editing by Jacob Schulsinger, costume designer Lindsay Pugh, production designer Cara Brower, and Sean Bobbitt, BSC, as the director of photography.

The movie will be released in select theaters on October 22 before making its Prime Video streaming debut on October 29.
