Nivea Reveals Leukemia Diagnosis, Says Treatment Is Going Well

R&B singer Nivea has revealed that she was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year and is currently undergoing treatment.

The 44-year-old singer shared the diagnosis during the July 21 episode of the Atlanta-based performance and interview series Cadillac Chronicles. Although she did not disclose which type of leukemia she has or provide details about her treatment plan, she said her care has been progressing well.

"I've been going through treatment, and everything is going great so far, and I expect it to continue," Nivea said during the interview. "Amen, amen, amen."

The diagnosis has changed how she approaches her life, the singer explained, giving her a renewed sense of gratitude and perspective.

"It's so cliché to say you don't know the time nor the hour, but it's true," she said. "It just helped me put a lot of things in perspective, and I live in gratitude, like, religiously, and I'm just grateful for everything."

Nivea also said she is spending more time doing the things she has long wanted to pursue. That includes returning to music and studying audio engineering, with a particular interest in mixing.

"I'm doing things I wanna do," she told host Brian Freeman. "I'm definitely back into my music, and I'm going to school for audio engineering. I've always wanted to learn how to engineer, and mixing engineering in particular."

She added that she is focused on loving her children and taking advantage of the opportunities that come her way.

Born Nivea B. Hamilton, the Atlanta singer emerged during the early 2000s and appeared on Mystikal's 2000 single "Danger (Been So Long)." Her self-titled debut album produced "Don't Mess with My Man," featuring Brian and Brandon Casey of Jagged Edge, and "Laundromat."

"Don't Mess with My Man" reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Nivea her first Grammy nomination in 2003 for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

Nivea later released the albums Complicated and Animalistic, followed by the independently released project Mirrors in 2019. Her comments on Cadillac Chronicles indicate that she is now actively working toward another chapter in her recording career.

The singer shares three children with her former husband, singer-songwriter and producer The-Dream, and a son with her former fiancé Lil Wayne.

Nivea has not announced any upcoming single or album, but her disclosure has prompted messages of support from fans and fellow artists, including rapper and television personality Rasheeda.

Her specific form of leukemia and treatment plan remain private.
