Holy Batman, casting! Or should we say, holy Blue Beetle! Yes, another MAJOR piece of One Piece season three casting has been revealed, and it’s one we have ALL been waiting for. In a move right out of many fans’ fan-casting wishlists, Xolo Maridueña has been cast as Portgas D. Ace, also known colloquially as Ace. Ace is a BELOVED character in the One Piece fandom, and his journey is full of twists, turns, laughs, and tears. Netflix’s One Piece season three casting Xolo Maridueña as Ace is sheer genius.
The Blue Beetle is trading his super suit for the high seas. Xolo Maridueña will play One Piece‘s Portgas D. Ace in One Piece season three. We already knew that One Piece season three would head into the epic Alabasta arc, but this casting CONFIRMS it, as Ace plays a major role in the story. Fans have long speculated that Xolo Maridueña would play this major role, and now they are RIGHT.
Xolo Maridueña was previously in the Netflix series, Cobra Kai, so it makes sense he was able to easily crossover. One Piece‘s Luffy, Iñaki Godoy, even came to visit the set and sparred with Maridueña not too long ago.
Look away if you don’t want any spoilers. But most crucially, Xolo Maridueña’s Ace fills the role of Luffy’s older brother in One Piece‘s world. To clarify, Ace and Luffy don’t share any literal blood, but they swore to be brothers as children. And, in the world of One Piece, that bond is even stronger than blood. Found family is a KEY theme, and Luffy and Ace’s relationship takes that connection to the next level. Additionally, Luffy’s grandfather, Monkey D. Garp, adopted Ace at a young age. Although Luffy and Ace do not share the same parents, Ace is very much Luffy’s older brother.
Beyond his relationship with Luffy, Ace is an incredibly talented pirate who hails from a STORIED pirate lineage. Ace is known as “Fire Fist” because he can manipulate fire; he can even turn his whole body into flame. This fire power was granted to Ace by the Logia-type Devil Fruit, Mera Mera no Mi (Flame-Flame Fruit).
We can’t wait to see Xolo Maridueña’s Ace wield this epic power in season three of Netflix’s live-action One Piece. We also can’t wait to see Xolo Maridueña in a scene with One Piece‘s Luffy, played by Iñaki Godoy.
Netflix’s live-action One Piece has been confirmed for seasons two and three. One Piece season two, Into the Grand Line, will officially release in March. Meanwhile, One Piece season three is “is set to go back into production later this year in Cape Town, South Africa.” Xolo Maridueña is the second major casting we’ve seen from One Piece season three. The first was Cole Escola, who was cast as Bon Clay.
We can’t wait to get one step closer to becoming King of the Pirates. You can watch One Piece season one streaming on Netflix today.
