Column: We Thought the Rain Beat Us. It Didn’t.

Sometimes covering racing isn’t about the race itself. It’s about everything it takes just to be there when the green flag finally waves.

Lead Lap Racing spent the entire weekend at Nashville Superspeedway covering the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix, only to watch Mother Nature unleash what can only be described as a Noah’s Ark-level monsoon Sunday evening. After multiple weather delays and an all-out effort to dry the racing surface, IndyCar officially postponed the race until Monday afternoon.

That left us with a decision.

Stay in Nashville and miss obligations back in Atlanta, or make the drive through the night and leave the track.

Unfortunately, we had some pretty big commitments to Monday. After all, this was the first IndyCar race to get postponed since 2018.

Late Sunday night, after one final look at a soaked superspeedway, we fueled up the car, grabbed some McDonald’s and pointed the nose south. One nasty storm after another followed us out of Tennessee, but somehow we threaded the needle and kept moving. By the time we reached Atlanta, we’d crossed the time zone, lost an hour and finally rolled in around 2 a.m.

The gear came out. Cameras were unpacked. Batteries went on chargers. A few hours of sleep followed before Monday morning meetings.

Then it hit me. Ain’t no rest for the wicked. IndyCar only hits a high-speed oval a few times a year. What’s 8 more hours of driving?

So, with credit to Red Bull and NOS Energy, plus Pearl Jam Radio, we decided to do the unthinkable.

Fueled by caffeine, a love of racing and a desire to make sure this event was covered the right way, Jackson Fryburger climbed back behind the wheel and headed north to Music City once more. As the NTT IndyCar Series prepared to race Monday afternoon, Lead Lap Racing was back where it belonged — inside Nashville Superspeedway.

No excuses. No shortcuts.

Just racing.

The funny part? This isn’t even unusual around here anymore.

For more than 10 consecutive days, we’ve been on covering nationally televised races across the country at every hour of day. From EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta to the Slinger Nationals in Wisconsin, Eldora Speedway in Ohio, North Wilkesboro Speedway and now Nashville Superspeedway, the miles have piled up almost as quickly as the stories, both in person and on Flo. Some days begin before sunrise. Others don’t end until well after midnight.

That’s startup life.

We’re not backed by a television network or a massive newsroom. We’re a small group of race fans who believe motorsports deserves passionate, boots-on-the-ground coverage, and we’re willing to put in the miles to make it happen.

The Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix may have been postponed, shortened to 225 laps because of Monday’s extreme heat forecast and moved to a weekday afternoon, but our commitment never changed.

If there’s racing, we want to be there.

Because nobody loves “wheel” more than the people willing to drive through the night just to make sure they don’t miss it.
