If you’ve been hearing about a jump scare during one of the trailers before The Odyssey in theaters, this is the movie that everyone’s talking about.
Other Mommy, starring Jessica Chastain, is directed by Rob Savage and written by Nathan Elston. It is based on Josh Malerman’s book, Incidents Around the House. The trailer, which you can watch above, introduces Chastain’s characters … and it’s chilling, with 8-year-old Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark) earning the first scare: “You said you wouldn’t leave my room,” Bela says. “You seemed lonely,” says “Other Mommy.”
Read on for everything we know so far about the chilling Other Mommy, from the theatrical release date to the cast and more.
Other Mommy will be in theaters on Friday, October 9, 2026. (Originally, the release date was May 8, 2026.)
It’s too early for digital release or streaming dates. That information isn’t released until after a movie is already in theaters.
In addition to Jessica Chastain in two roles (as Ursula and “Other Mommy”), the cast includes Jay Duplass (as Russ, Bela’s father and Ursula’s husband), Arabella Olivia Clark (as Bela), Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, Karen Allen, Sean Kaufman, Adam Silver, and Rosie Anne O’Gorman.
The horror film follows Bela, an 8-year-old girl living in a home with marital problems who confronts a sinister entity that comes out of her closet. The presence, whom she refers to as “Other Mommy,” becomes increasingly threatening to her and her family.
Yes, and you can watch it above to get a taste of the terror coming to this family because of “Other Mommy,” as well as Ursula’s reaction to her existence. We’re not at all surprised by Bela asking at one point, “Is it really you? Are you tricking me?”
