Patrick Godfrey Dies: ‘Ever After’ Star Was 93

Patrick Godfrey, the actor best known for his role in Ever After: A Cinderella Story alongside Drew Barrymore, is dead at 93.

On Friday, June 5, Godfrey’s talent agency, Markham Froggatt & Irwin, announced his death in a statement published on its website.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm Patrick Godfrey passed away last night,” the agency said of his Thursday, June 4, death. “He died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family. Paddy was an exceptionally talented actor and a remarkable individual, and we will miss him greatly.”

A cause of death was not revealed, as of writing.

In 1998’s Ever After, Godfrey played Leonardo Da Vinci in the story inspired by Cinderella. Barrymore played Danielle, the Cinderella-like character, while Dougray Scott played Prince Henry and Anjelica Huston played the evil stepmother, Rodmilla. Meanwhile, Megan Dodds and Melanie Lynskey played the stepsisters.

Godfrey’s other notable film credits included A Room With a View (1986), Maurice (1987), The Remains of the Day (1993), The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), and Les Misérables (2012). Additionally, he appeared in TV shows like Doctor Who and Inspector Morse. Godfrey was involved in plays like The Zykovs, The Iceman Cometh, and Enemies.

Following the actor’s death, playwright Bill Rosenfield posted a tribute on Facebook. “Our wonderful next-door neighbor, Patrick Godfrey, passed away peacefully last night. He was 93 years old,” he wrote alongside a photo of the actor. “Our hearts go out to our friends: his wife, Amanda Walker, and their children Kate and Richard.”

“With a theatrical career spanning nearly 70 years (!), Patrick is a prime example of what it means to be a ‘working actor,'” Rosenfield continued. “Over those decades, you’ve seen him countless times on film…on television…and on stage—it is a rich rollercoaster of a career, one which any actor would be proud to call their own. Yet, it’s the good neighbor we’ll remember most fondly.”

He also described Godfrey as a “wonderful man, a fine actor and a great friend.”
