Picture perfect: 20 movies with stunningly idyllic locations

Movies have always been a form of escapism. Since the early days of cinema, people have gone to the movies to be taken somewhere, someplace, outside of their daily routines. Whether that be a war in space or a dazzling beach in Italy, movies are a wonderful way to travel somewhere different. Here are some films that take you to idyllic locations.

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)

Under the Tuscan Sun (2003)
Touchstone Pictures

When Diane Lane buys a broken villa in Tuscany, she begins fixing her home and her broken heart. A bit sappy, a bit drab and totally and completely transporting, Tuscan Sun is worth a trip for the locations alone.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
Universal Studios

Another movie about a vacation inspired by a breakup, this comedy sees a schlub try to get it together at a tropical resort. Of course, things take a turn toward slapstick when his ex is at the very same resort, a coincidence that makes for lots of laughs and some heartwarming moments as well.

La Piscine (1969)

La Piscine (1969)
The Criterion Collection

There's the French Riviera, the magnificent villa, the lush greenery swaying in the evening wind and the turquoise ocean waving in the distance, but none of it compares to the beauty of Alain Delon. The most alluring movie star ever, Delon may be the cause of the heatwave in this vacation thriller.

Roman Holiday (1953)

Roman Holiday (1953)
Paramount Pictures

Rome is one of the most beautiful places I have been and Audrey Hepburn is one of the most beautiful actresses I have seen--combine the two, some slapstick involving a princess and a reporter and an ending that inspired Notting Hill and you got an instant classic.

Amarcord (1973)

Amarcord (1973)
The Criterion Collection

Gorgeous beaches, sunny countrysides, quirky characters and puffballs soaring across the turquoise sky are some of the many features of Federico Fellini's hometown, which is featured in a series of vignettes in Amarcord. A memory of Fellini's childhood, this is cinema at its most transporting.

Notting Hill (1999)

Notting Hill (1999)
The Criterion Collection

She's just a girl, staring at a boy, telling him that she loves him--well, she's actually a movie star played by Julia Roberts, but you get the point. Notting Hill is one of the great movies about true love and one of the great ads for teeth whitening strips. Dang, does Julia Roberts have a great smile?

Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants (2005)

A one size fits all comedy that everyone can enjoy, Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants sees best friends in high school embark on their summer vacations and connect through a pair of magical pants. It's silly, yes, but kind of a touching movie as well.

Francois Truffaut brings a sunny, whimsical and inventive energy to this French New Wave classic. The locations are idyllic, yes, but the way Truffaut films them brings them magnificently to life.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)
The Criterion Collection

How can a movie about bandits on the run by idyllic? It's a bromance for the ages, the locations are ruggedly poetic and the tone of this movie is lyrical and fun. That should be enough reason to put this movie on our list.

The Sound of Music (1965)

The Sound of Music (1965)
20th Century Fox

Porco Rosso (1992)

Porco Rosso (1992)
Studio Ghibli

Hayao Miyazaki may be the most travelled of all directors since his dad created planes and his films live, breathe and embody--often with the lyrical breezes of fantasy--the natural beauty of poetic locations. This movie is about a pig who becomes a fighter pilot, but the locations surrounding him remain grounded in natural splendor.

More Miyazaki! The director offers a tidal wave of lyrical locations in this story of a fish becoming a human.

The town of Rochefort comes twirling to life in this musical about people searching for love. The window shutters are pastel perfection, the buildings are gorgeous, the people are dressed in vivacious hues and the sun always seems to glisten off a smile. The Young Girls of Rochefort is cotton candy-colored splendor.
