Pixar announces new original film "Gatto"

Pixar bigwig Pete Docter made a splash at France's Annecy Animation Festival. In addition to a substantive, perhaps please-see-this-movie look at the soon-to-be-released "Elio," Docter gave an update on the upcoming "Toy Story 5." In addition to laying out the "toy meets tech" conflict driving the plot, apparently a couple minutes of the movie was screened to those at the presentation.

Most were already well-aware of the looming arrival (next summer) of "Toy Story 5," but Docter also announced a new Pixar movie for the slate, and it is an original story.

"Gatto" is from Enrico Casarosa, who directed "Luca" previously for Pixar. Like that film, "Gatto" takes place in his native Italy, this time evidently in Venice.

Though this film is set in the Italian city famous for its canals, there are no fish boys central to this plot. "Gatto" centers, as expected if you know any Italian or enough Spanish to take an educated guess, on a cat. Specifically, a black cat named Nero. Nero finds himself in debt to a cat who is a mob boss, which would feel like some awkward Italian stereotyping if this movie wasn't directed by an Italian. Then, a street artist named Maya adopts a begrudging Nero, and things will go from there in some way, shape, or form.

A lot of people really dug the look of "Luca," so one imagines that Casarosa's new movie will at least succeed at offering a lush aesthetic. Of course, since animation takes a while, and "Toy Story 5" has next summer locked up, "Gatto" isn't scheduled to be released until June 2027.
