Fans hoping to get a Lil Wayne appearance at Super Bowl 59 are going to be disappointed.
Back in September, when rapper Kendrick Lamar was announced as the halftime performer for this year's Super Bowl in New Orleans, there were more than a few people who said Wayne should have been the choice. At the time, the Big Easy native admitted to being disappointed, saying in a statement that the decision "broke me."
“That hurt, it hurt a lot,” Wayne said at the time. “I thought there was nothing better that spot, on that stage, on that platform.”
Despite the snub, there were some people holding out hope that Wayne would be joining Kendrick on stage, but that won't be happening.
In a statement released on his Instagram story today, Wayne said he won't be attending the game at Caesars Superdome but has something in the works for fans later this week.
"Y'all know I'm not gonna be there this week, which means, I guess there's a seat to fill," Wayne said. "Shoutout to New Orleans, but I've been working on something very special. I've got something exciting for you. Thursday, the 6th. 'Til then, I'm just chillin'."
It's clear Lil Wayne has some project in the works, though we'll have to wait two more days to find out what it is. As for Sunday, the only confirmed performer who will be joining Kendrick is SZA, who will also be touring with the "Not Like Us" rapper this year.
Maybe if Lil Wayne's beloved Green Bay Packers made the big game this year, he still would have gone. However, they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card round.
The Eagles made it all the way to New Orleans for their second Super Bowl appearance in the last three years. They will meet the Kansas City Chiefs, who are going for a three-peat, in Super Bowl 59 on Sunday night.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET on FOX.
