Rob Reiner saved Seinfeld from cancellation NBC/CBS

The world is still reeling from the death of legendary director and exceptional human being, Rob Reiner . And, as will happen during these times, new stories about the greatness of the person who has left us are surfacing. Rob Reiner touched many lives through the various projects he supported with his time and money. And, of course, his own impact on pop culture is unquestioned. But it turns out we owe him a debt greater than we realized. In a post paying tribute to Rob Reiner’s life, Jerry Seinfeld revealed that the director actually saved Seinfeld from cancellation.

Seinfeld writes in his post, “Our show would have never happened without him. He saw something no one else could. When nobody at the network liked the early episodes, he saved us from cancellation… That I was working with Carl Reiner’s son, who happened to be one of the kindest people in show business, seemed unreal. I was naive at the time to how much his passion for us meant.” We’re not surprised that Rob Reiner saw magic in Seinfeld, a show worth saving, when others saw nothing. After all, Reiner managed to create seminal works in a plethora of genres that have withstood the test of time.

Seinfeld, of course, has become a foundational show in our pop-culture history. While it initially barely scraped through to air, it went on to release 180 episodes that defined generations. It’s incredible that without Rob Reiner, Seinfeld might never have made it beyond its earliest chapters. Truly mind blowing.

The death of Rob Reiner is deeply felt. But it’s clear that his life had so much impact in so many different ways. From Seinfeld to The Princess Bride to When Harry Met Sally, we’re grateful that Rob Reiner touched our lives as well.
