Ron Howard says there is only one person who can get him back into acting

Ron Howard recently revealed to PEOPLE that while he would "love to do some acting," he doesn't see himself returning to it any time soon. "I happen to play myself in an upcoming episode of The Studio, and I had a lot of fun doing that… but it’s hard to make time for," he commented.

However, there is one person who could change that. "I think that if my daughter Bryce cast me in something, that would compel me to put down the directing obligation, put them on hold for a minute and show up," Howard shared. "But otherwise, between what's going on at my company Imagine Entertainment with Brian Grazer and our team, and what I'm personally trying directorially, I keep my calendar full in ways that are exciting and I want to succeed at. I want to focus."

The Happy Days star now enjoys working behind the camera, expressing, "In the last decade, I’ve begun working on documentaries as well as scripted films, and I really love both."

"It's stimulating some growth for me creatively, which is exciting at this point in my life. There are so many stories and ideas, a taste shift, a sensibility shift, and that puts different kinds of focus on storylines and styles of storytelling in cinema," he explained. “It is endlessly fascinating and satisfying for me, and I feel fortunate to keep doing it. It’s the medium that can’t be mastered. A little bit like baseball, nobody bats a thousand. You have to recognize that about filmmaking: You give it the medium and the audience and everything you’ve got, and then try to look for the next great story.”

One of his other upcoming projects includes Eden, which is based on a true story. While at the Toronto Film Festival, he told Deadline, "Starting out a while ago with Apollo 13, I’ve been gravitating toward these kinds of stories based on real events. Where characters are really pressure tested, and it reveals a lot about them. I think one of the reasons people find this one a little surprising is that here, the characters are so layered and complex, that the choices they made that we play out in the film are intense and shocking. They’re utterly human. It is a lot of fun to follow the events as the conflict unfolds."

He continued to say, "It is a thriller, and part of that suspense is wondering who’s going to survive and why. This true story was so full of that. It is based on two wildly different accounts of the same unsolved mystery. As you delve into it, it certainly falls into that category of stranger than fiction."

Fight for Glory: 2024 World Series, which he executive produced, is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
