Ron Howard's 'Eden' survival thriller releases first trailer

Vertical has shared the official teaser for Ron Howard's Eden. The film, which was written by Noah Pink, stars Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Daniel Brühl, and Sydney Sweeney.

Eden unravels the shocking true story of a group of disillusioned outsiders who abandon civilization, settling on a remote, uninhabited island only to discover that the greatest threat isn’t the brutal climate or deadly wildlife, but each other. As tensions spiral and desperation takes hold, a twisted power struggle unfolds, leading to betrayal, violence, and the deaths of half the colony.

"This is an indie movie, and that is about putting together a team, not just getting people to raise their hands when you hire through the studio system. I wouldn’t move forward unless I had people who were creative enough, committed enough and courageous enough to take on these characters, and were turned on by the idea. And I found such an exciting group to work with," the director/producer told Deadline. "Really, it was challenging. The schedule was tight, budget was tight. Everybody was there because they wanted to be, on a creative level. And I felt very supported as a filmmaker by these tremendously talented people throwing themselves into this project as they did. It was very exciting. But due to the intensity of the shoot, it was one of these things, Mike, where literally every day we were doing a scene that was potentially very memorable, challenging for everyone, but creatively exciting. And so that really kept us going."

Additional producers include Brian Grazer, Karen Lunder, Stuart Ford, William M. Connor, and Patrick Newall.

"You read all these crazy characters, there’s no way that they all are real, and they all come together and they have all these experiences," Sweeney expressed to TheWrap, remembering her first reaction while reading the script. "But then I went and I read Dora [Strauch’s] book, and I read Margret [Wittmer’s] book, and I found all the newspaper clippings of all their stories and it’s the most wild account of people just put together."

"I had no idea about it, and I definitely thought it was crazy, and it was very brave and it’s just the unthinkable," de Armas said of the story. "And when it is true, if they don’t tell you it is true and you see testament of it, a documentary or newspapers or whatever you can find, it’s hard to believe that these people, back then in the ’30s, embarked on a trip to an island to start from zero."

Eden will be released August 22, only in theaters.
