Wrexham’s rise under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney has been one of football’s standout stories, but their push for a fourth consecutive promotion is now facing a stern reality check.

The Welsh side sit seventh in the Championship with 64 points, four behind sixth-placed Hull City, with just four games remaining. That gap has shifted control away from Wrexham at a crucial stage.

Recent performances have only added to the pressure, as momentum that once defined their season has given way to inconsistency at the worst possible moment.

Wrexham now ‘underdogs’ as promotion race exposes harsh reality

Wrexham have taken just one point from their last three matches, including a heavy 5-1 defeat to Southampton and a 2-0 loss against Birmingham, halting their charge towards the playoffs.

The external narrative has shifted accordingly, with Don Goodman telling GOAL: “Yes, I think they [Wrexham] wanted to be competitive. And obviously January came around and they were well in it. And to be honest with you, four games, they are still well in it, but they’ve got some tough games left.”

He added: “So they would be outsiders. They would be the underdogs, I would say, between themselves and Hull. Because I think the top five is set now. But Hull have got a four-point gap on Wrexham and I just wonder how crucial that could be.”

In that context, manager Phil Parkinson has maintained belief, insisting the situation is still recoverable while stressing the need to improve performances.

Championship step reveals ceiling of Wrexham’s rise

The challenge Wrexham now face reflects the scale of the Championship, widely regarded as one of football’s most demanding second-tier tournaments.

No club has ever secured four consecutive promotions at this level, highlighting the difficulty of sustaining such rapid progress.

Wrexham have already achieved three straight promotions, and they should be proud of it regardless of how this season is going to end.
