Is Sam Raimi directing Spider-Man 4? The man himself has responded, and it’s disappointing news.
The director of the original Spider-Man trilogy from 2002-2007 told CBR in an interview during WonderCon he’s seen the rumors he’s already started developing a sequel starring Tobey Maguire, and they’re false.
"I did read that, but I'm not actually working on it yet. I mean, Marvel and Columbia are so successful with current Spider-Man [movies], and the track there, and I don't know that they're going to go back to me, and say, 'Well, folks, we can also tell that story!'”
One ray of hope is Raimi using the word “yet,” which leaves the door open for him to direct a Spider-Man film down the line. He’s worked with Marvel before, having helmed 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That film grossed $955 million globally.
Raimi continued, “I haven't talked to Tobey about it, but maybe Marvel has, or Columbia Pictures. But, I just worked with Marvel on a movie called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So, I'm on great terms with them. I'm sure I would hear about it if it was in the works. I think so. I don't know."
So while Raimi hasn’t written off the possibility of directing Spider-Man 4 completely, the wheels definitely aren’t in motion for him yet.
With Tom Holland’s Spider-Man due a fourth film, as well as the animated Spider-Verse movies centring a second Spider-Man, a third concurrent Spider-Man in Tobey Maguire runs the risk of diluting the character.
