Remember 'Schitt’s Creek'? The most successful Canadian sitcom, at least outside of Canada, in history? The one people latched onto during the COVID-19 pandemic? All four main actors won Emmys, and the series took home Outstanding Comedy Series as well.
Co-created by costars Eugene and Dan Levy, 'Schitt’s Creek' had a genuine cultural moment. These days, though, it seems to have slipped from the collective memory. For a stretch there, though, it was huge.
Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara were already established comedy legends when 'Schitt’s Creek' debuted, and they’ve kept busy since. O’Hara basically reprised Moira Rose in 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.' Levy did a season of 'Only Murders in the Building' and launched a travel show. Annie Murphy landed an AMC series that didn’t quite connect but turned in a strong performance in season two of 'Russian Doll.' And all three of them, along with Dan Levy, have been fixtures in commercials.
Dan Levy, however, has been relatively quiet creatively. He did take on the plum role of Andy Warhol in 'Unfrosted.' Now, he’s stepping back into a big way: Levy co-created and is showrunning an upcoming Netflix series.
The series has been in development for a while, but it’s now filming, has added cast members, and officially has a title. 'Big Mistakes' is a crime comedy about two siblings who, through blackmail, find themselves pulled into the world of organized crime. Taylor Ortega and Laurie Metcalf play the siblings, with Dan Levy taking on a smaller role himself. The newest cast addition is Elizabeth Perkins, best known for 'Weeds' and 'Big,' among other projects.
Given that Levy was such a driving creative force behind 'Schitt’s Creek,' a show that was good, if briefly overhyped, it’s nice to see him back in the writing and producing realm. And really, we have enough celebrities in commercials already.
