Popular medical comedy Scrubs was on from 2001 to 2010. The beloved show featured Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke. Its irreverent humor, fun storylines, and hospital hijinks made the show a favorite. Plus, characters like JD, Turk, Elliot, Cox, and Janitor (Neil Flynn) gave this show a loyal fan base.
Besides Zach Braff, who played Dr. John “JD” Dorian, both Donald Faison (Dr. Turk) and Sarah Chalke (Dr. Reid) have signed on. Judy Reyes (Carla) has recently been on High Potential, but it is unclear if she’ll be back for the Scrubs redux.
It is not known yet if John C. McGinley and Neil Flynn are returning. Bill Lawrence will be producing, but at this point in time, there may be other showrunners. Lawrence stated in part:
…so [we] have a combination of the old and new. We’re just starting to build it right now.
Braff, Chalke, and Faison have all kept busy since Scrubs ended about 15 years ago. Most famously, Sarah Chalke played Becky on Roseanne and The Conners. Zach Braff has worked in some voice roles and, most recently, has been in Bad Monkey. Donald Faison, also a voice actor, has been in Emergence, and he played Trey in Extended
Family.
Scrubs is in pre-production at this time. In late 2024, it was announced after some negotiations with Bill Lawrence and Disney. Lawrence has produced Shrinking, Bad Monkey, and Ted Lasso. It will likely make a possible debut in the latter part of 2026 or early 2027.
The idea of a reboot has been kicked around for a while, as Scrubs was quite successful. A catalyst that may have motivated this revival is that the 2025 medical drama The Pitt (starring Noah Wyle) is so successful.
A few fun facts about Scrubs: although some of the show was ad-libbed, much of Neil Flynn‘s dialogue was improvised. And just maybe the “pancake drawer” discussion between Cara and Turk might be resolved after all.
Over the past five decades, we’ve had some amazing comedy shows. People tend to gravitate towards shows where they can relate to the characters. Between having a sitcom about doctors and nurses, creative quips, and a likable cast, we hope that this upcoming second iteration of Scrubs is up to the task.
