Sean Gunn, younger brother of current DCU co-chief, James Gunn, had his breakout role in 2000 as Kirk Gleason in the beloved TV show, Gilmore Girls. In 2014, Gunn was cast as the Ravager, Kraglin, in his brother James’ MCU debut Guardians of the Galaxy.

His life trajectory would change forever. At Comic Con Cape Town, Gunn reflected on navigating the limelight alongside numerous prominent Hollywood figures, finding himself in awe of the majority of them. Yet, amidst this constellation of stars, one stood out distinctly: Margot Robbie.

What Is Sean Gunn’s Superhero Story?

Gunn has been a mainstay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since he first appeared as a member of Yondu’s crew in 2014. He has since appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), What If…?(2021), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) for Marvel.

Over at DC, James Gunn was hired as the director for a soft reboot of The Suicide Squad. James cast Sean in the roles of Weasel and Calendar Man. James has since been installed as the main guy over at DC Studios, building his new world over the past year.

Sean Gunn was cast in the animated DCU show Creature Commandos as G.I. Robot, in addition to returning as Weasel. His biggest role in the new universe comes as notorious DC villain and business tycoon Maxwell Lord in the James Gunn-directed Superman.

Sean Gunn Reacts at Comic Con Cape Town to Sharing the Set With Top Talent

Gunn worked with many A-Listers on the set of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame (which filmed back-to-back), but he was more focused on doing his job than being starstruck by his costars.

“I remember my first day on set with Avengers (Infinity War). It’s time and we’re making our way to set to rehearse a scene. I show up and it’s Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd and Brie Larson and they’re all there. And I have a job to do, it’s like game-time. To use a sports analogy, you can be the last person on the bench but you’re still a member of the team, you’re not sitting in the audience. So I don’t really have time to be star struck over my colleagues. There’s work to do so I just have to be ready for when the ball gets passed to me to do my job.”

Gunn mentioned that the one person he was starstruck by meeting was Elliott Gould (Friends). However, across both studios, though, the person who left a lasting impression on him was Margot Robbie.

“Margot Robbie. More than anybody. Almost everybody surprises me (with the talent that they have), so much that I’m not surprised anymore. But in the brief time I worked with Margot on The Suicide Squad, I was just blown away by her technical ability in addition to her acting chops, and really being in the moment and being a remarkable actor. She is a really special talent.”

Sean Gunn Has a Bright Future at Both DC and Marvel Studios

Gunn’s role in the MCU was left open-ended at the conclusion of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy last year, where he is now a formal part of the team. This allows him to appear in future MCU projects should the team be called on again.

He is now fully focused on Creature Commandos, which will release later this year, and Superman, which is currently filming with a release date of July 11, 2025. The future is bright for Sean Gunn, and he could prove to be a focal point in the DCU’s future.

Maybe he’ll get the opportunity to work with Margot Robbie again, as her role as Harley Quinn is still up in the air and other characters from the DCEU are confirmed to be joining, like Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) and Peacekeeper (John Cena).
