Shaquille O’Neal and Kevin Hart’s connection runs deeper than most fans realize, and a recent revelation has brought their history back into the spotlight. The comedian recently admitted that a simple favor from Shaq in 2009 became a turning point in his career, helping him build the $450 million empire he has today.
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Hart revealed that O’Neal had asked him to headline the Shaquille O’Neal Comedy All-Star Jam during NBA All-Star Weekend. At the time, Hart didn’t think much of the gig and even considered it a throwaway performance.
“I did it as a favor,” Hart said. “I was about to drop my special, so I didn’t really want to do it. But they were like, ‘Kev, come on, we need a headliner.’”
What Hart didn’t expect was the massive popularity of the event, which helped put him on the map in comedy at a higher level. He later partnered with Shaq to produce more Comedy All-Star specials, cementing his place as a top name in entertainment.
However, O’Neal’s role in the Comedy All-Star Jam has taken an unexpected turn. While his name remains attached to the event, it appears he no longer has control over it.
In 2023, O’Neal sold Jersey Legends Productions, which was one of the studios behind the event, to Authentic Brands Group. This likely explains why he was unaware that a 2025 Comedy All-Star Jam was even happening.

During The Big Podcast, O’Neal seemed caught off guard when guest DC Young Fly mentioned the upcoming event.
“We got a show out here tonight… It’s the All-Star Comedy Jam, they had your name on it,” DC Young Fly told him.
O’Neal, who helped launch the event as a way to support new comedic talent, now finds himself unexpectedly distanced from the brand he helped build. Whether he chooses to reclaim his stake or let the franchise move forward without him remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Hart continues to thrive, and his connection to Shaq’s past comedy empire remains one of the most unexpected stepping stones in his career.
