"Sinners" got some costumes from an unexpected source

"Sinners" is the success story of 2025 on the big screen. An original, R-rated movie proved a massive success at the box office while making a significant cultural impact as well. While "Sinners" is a vampire movie, they did a bit of zombie-ing by feasting on the corpse of a dead Marvel production. At least, they did that on the costuming front.

This fun fact comes to us from "Sinners" producer Sev Ohanian. Well, fun if you aren't Mahershala Ali. A lot of the costumes used in "Sinners" were left over from Marvel's "Blade" movie starring Ali that got scuppered. As Ohanian explained:

Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting. At one point that movie was going to deal with, and she’s talked about this before, but at one point that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as "Sinners." She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, "Yo, we got to shoot this movie like tomorrow." And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price.

Carter, if you aren't familiar with her name, is one of the most acclaimed working costume designers. She has four Oscar nominations and has won twice, both for "Black Panther" movies. She also worked on "Black Dynamite," which rules.

"Sinners" lucked out in the fact that the unused costumes from a Marvel movie (a vampire-centric Marvel movie at that) were available. It's not at all surprising, though, that Marvel was down to do Coogler a solid. After all, he directed both the "Black Panther" movies. Marvel loves him.

As to the Blade movie, it may still happen. Ali, for one, is down for it. Of course, they'll need new costumes now.
