Shed no tears for "A Minecraft Movie." In its third weekend it barely finished second in the domestic box office, bringing in $41.3 million. The Jack Black-led vehicle (well, it's led by the intellectual property Gen Zers have nostalgic/active affinity for) has now made $344 domestically and $720.8 million worldwide. However, in the end, a new movie jumped into the top spot. Also, in what will spark joy for many, it's an R-rated movie not based on any pre-existing property.
"Sinners" made $45.6 million domestically, though it only added $15.4 million in the rest of the world. An R-rated vampire movie not based on a video game or an old movie is a harder sell in other markets. However, let's not fret where we could celebrate. Having movies like "Sinners" earning rave reviews and bringing people into the theaters has value to those dreaming of a world not awash in nothing but nostalgia plays.
This is, instead, probably a reflection of the fact there are perhaps still movie stars out there that can sell movies, and perhaps even directors out there that can sell movies. When they join forces, it can be even better. Director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan like to work together. Jordan has literally starred or co-starred in every Coogler film, and they both made their names with "Fruitvale Station." They made "Creed" together. Oh yeah, and also this:
Sure, you could then argue that Coogler and Jordan were able to make "Sinners," and have "Sinners" be so successful, thanks to a "Rocky" reboot and the MCU. Again, let's not fret. "Sinners" was the number-one movie at the box office. Coogler and Jordan sold a film on their names. They will get a chance to do that again.
