This is less a news post and more a message for those closest to Tom Holland. Please stop him. Stop him from doing something no writer, director, producer, or movie star should ever do: read the comments. Because that’s exactly what he says he’s currently doing ahead of his next turn as Peter Parker. Holland says he’s going on the internet to find what fans want from Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Even worse? He’s then pitching those ideas to Marvel and Sony.
Holland told LADBible (in an interview we first heard about at Variety) he’s been seeking out fan feedback on the world wide web. And not as a lark! “I have been actively sifting through the internet and trying to best understand what it is that the fans want from a Spider-Man movie,” he said. “And that’s been my driving force in these pitch meetings.”
Hoo boy. Hoooooooo boy. Or rather, Hoooooo Holland. Those of us old enough to remember fan suggestions for the Star Wars prequel know this is a very, very bad idea. I’m still and forever haunted by the poster who said they wanted to see a child Han Solo playing with a child Greedo. (Yes, this was a sincere suggestion.) For every good fan idea, there are 10,000 bad ones. And often times fans have zero idea what the hell they’re talking about. No one wanted Michael Keaton as Batman. Few thought Heath Ledger would make for a good Joker.
While Holland’s internet surfing is definitely not a good use of his time, at least his motivations for doing so are good. “I think the producers, at times were like, absolutely sick of me,” he said. “But I think it’s really important, because we make these movies for [the fans].”
Yes, make them for the fans. Just don’t make them with the fans. Besides, no fan, even if they think they do, actually wants to have any say in how their favorite movies get made. If they’re bad, they’ll have no one to blame but themselves. Can someone close to Tom Holland tell him that, too?
