'Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge' at Disneyland expands its timeline

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is one of the greatest and most well-realized lands in Disney history. But one complaint fans have had since it opened back in 2019 is that the land is “trapped” in one era of the Star Wars saga. Specifically, the time period between The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker. Disney has loosened up that timeline somewhat in recent years, but now the theme park is about to blow the blast doors wide open. Starting on April 29, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland Park will expand its thematic timeline to include more Star Wars eras, including the original trilogy. Right now, these changes only apply to Disneyland in Anaheim, not to the Walt Disney World version in Orlando.

Cast members performing as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo will join Chewbacca and R2-D2. And in pursuit will be Darth Vader and his Imperial Stormtroopers. New storylines will come to life at Black Spire Outpost on Batuu, spanning multiple eras of the planet’s rich history. These updates allow guests to experience the Galactic Civil War and the New Republic, as well as the Age of Resistance. Rey and other sequel trilogy characters will remain in the area near Rise of the Resistance, which will remain unchanged. The marketplace will showcase New Republic era characters, such as Mando and Grogu, as well as Ahsoka Tano.

At a Disneyland media event, Nerdist asked about characters from prequel and Clone Wars era coming to the land as part of the revamp. The Imagineers said that their goal is for the land to continue to evolve and change over time. But for right now, the focus is on the “classic” era. Luke Skywalker’s costume will reflect his Jedi robes from Return of the Jedi, which is also seen in The Mandalorian. Han will have his signature vest from the classic original trilogy films. Meanwhile, Leia Organa will wear a costume reminiscent of her look in Marvel’s more recent Star Wars comics. But maybe one day in the future, Anakin, Obi-Wan, Padme, and Darth Maul could pop up.

Another welcome addition fans have asked for is classic John Williams Star Wars music permeating throughout the land. As one passes through the tunnels into Galaxy’s Edge, you’ll now be able to hear Williams’ iconic “Main Title” and Force Theme. Other famous motifs you’ll hear include “Han Solo and the Princess” from The Empire Strikes Back, “The Desert and the Robot Auction” from A New Hope, “The Emperor” from Return of the Jedi, and others. And you’ll be able to hear the classic “Cantina Band” song from within Oga’s Cantina.

Meanwhile, the store First Order Cargo will transform into Black Spire Surplus. It’s now a military salvage operation offering artifacts from across the history of the galaxy, including Imperial and Rebel items. Two clones own the storefront, one who fought for the Rebellion, and the other, the Empire. There will also be storytelling updates to retail locations like Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities and Droid Depot. Also, Savi’s Workshop will now be period-specific, and park guests can continue to build their own custom lightsabers there.

The changes coming to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland begin on April 29. This is less than a month before Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run gets its big The Mandalorian and Grogu update on May 22. For more information, head on over to the official Disney Parks Blog.
