Super Bowl 60 National Anthem Singer Responds To Backlash

Earlier this week the NFL announced that Grammy-nominated musician Charlie Puth would be singing the national anthem at Super Bowl 60 in Levi's Stadium. But the announcement led to a fair amount of backlash that Puth has responded to.

Following the announcement, NFL fans who were disappointed to hear that Puth would be given the honors made their thoughts known on X. One of them, political commentator Link Lauren, declared we have "fallen" from the age where legends like Whitney Houston sang the song. He predicted that Puth won't give fans the right vocals.

"Man we’ve fallen from when Whitney Houston sang at the Super Bowl. Charlie Puth? He’s not gonna give us vocals I’m afraid," Lauren wrote.

Puth saw what Lauren and presumably others have said about the announcement and defended himself on social media. He said that while he recognizes he's not as good as the late-great Whitney Houston, he will be giving one of his best vocal performances.

"I’ll never claim to be as good of a singer as Whitney Houston ever was. But I assure you we’re putting a really special arrangement together- in D major. It’ll be one of my best vocal performances," Puth pledged.

To his credit, Lauren backtracked a bit by asserting that he's sure Puth will be fine but merely laments that "big belting divas" don't perform it anymore.

"Can’t wait! I wish you nothing but success, but just miss our big belting divas like Whitney. What an era. Make sure they know it’s D major and not b minor. Cheers Char!" Lauren wrote.

Charlie Puth's Career

Puth rose to fame in the mid-2010s through a combination of viral success, sharp songwriting, and standout vocal talent. After gaining early attention on YouTube, he broke into the mainstream with the emotional hit “See You Again” (2015), a collaboration with Wiz Khalifa that topped charts worldwide and earned multiple Grammy nominations. Puth followed this breakthrough with a string of successful pop singles, including “Marvin Gaye,” “One Call Away,” and “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” showcasing his knack for blending smooth vocals with tight, radio-friendly production. His debut album, Nine Track Mind (2016), cemented him as a rising star in contemporary pop.

Puth continued evolving his sound with Voicenotes (2018) and Charlie (2022), earning widespread praise for his precise production style, perfect pitch, and ability to craft modern pop infused with R&B and retro influences. Songs like “Attention,” “How Long,” and “Left and Right” (with Jungkook of BTS) highlighted his growth as both a producer and performer. Known for his musical technicality and highly engaging social-media presence—especially his process-oriented videos—Puth has built a career blending commercial success with fan-driven creativity, becoming one of the most recognizable and technically skilled pop artists of his generation.
