'Ted Lasso' star Cristo Fernández admits it annoys him when Americans say soccer

Football is life, not soccer.

Cristo Fernández, now known universally for playing Dani Rojas on Ted Lasso, stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live on Tuesday night (Aug. 24) and was presented with a crucial question by guest host Niall Horan.

"Like I do, do you find it annoying when Americans call it soccer?" Horan, an Irishman, asked.

"I have to be honest. I do," Fernández admitted with a laugh. "The thing is, I appreciate when everyone comes and thanks you for the show. It means everything. But, yeah, I'm from Mexico, so in Mexico, football is football. Everyone knows football. I'm afraid one day they're gonna grab me in a bad mood, and they're gonna say, 'Soccer is life!' And I'm gonna be like, 'It's football, you wanker!"

Other Ted Lasso stars have tackled this debate in the past:

Fernández then detailed his real-life professional football career from the time he was 15 years old. He played in Mexico and Puerto Rico.

"My parents intelligently told me to go for new dreams because I had some injuries in my knees," the actor said. "And I wanted to start studying communications and follow my dreams in acting and filmmaking and just go with that."

Fernández acted in television movies and video shorts until Ted Lasso, which premiered on Apple TV Plus last August and quickly became a global phenomenon. The 20-time Emmy-nominated comedy series debuted its second season July 23, and new episodes hit the streamer every Friday.

Ted Lasso stars Jason Sudeikis as the titular character, an abnormally earnest Kansas football coach hired by Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) to manage European football club AFC Richmond. It originated as a revenge plot to destroy Richmond as a way to get back at Welton's abusive ex-husband but evolved into a heartwarming underdog story filled with endearing characters such as Fernández's Rojas.

With Horan, Fernández also shared his humorous first meetings with Sudeikis and Apple CEO Tim Cook. Watch the interview below.
