Teen movie leads that’d be the best and worst prom dates

For as long as the modern-day American teenager has been around, the world has had teen movies to reflect their struggles with grades, friends, and everything else under the umbrella of high school. That includes prom, and while not every teen movie features a final dance, fans have always daydreamed about what it’d be like to show up to their proms in the arms of their favorite teen movie leads. Even when they weren’t the ultimate right choice, which is why it’s time to break down the teen movie leads that would be the best and worst prom dates.

Best: Zack Siler, ‘She’s All That’ (1999)

Best: Zack Siler, ‘She’s All That’ (1999)
Miramax Films

Zack Siler is one of those people that hit the jackpot in life. Handsome, athletically skilled, from a well-off family. He could have been the worst guy in school, and yes, he does take on the challenge of turning a supposed weirdo into the prom queen in the form of a bet, but he is never truly the villain of She’s All That. Zack showcases way too much heart early on that highlights he’s always had good intentions. So pair a sweetheart mentality with those looks, and it’s a win-win for everyone involved in the prom pairing.

Worst: Jim Levenstein, ‘American Pie’ (1999)

Worst: Jim Levenstein, ‘American Pie’ (1999)
Universal Studios

Nobody should have to worry about getting a pie-induced STD.

Best: Viola Hastings, ‘She’s The Man’ (2006)

Best: Viola Hastings, ‘She’s The Man’ (2006)
Dreamworks Pictures

Some want to spend an entire day getting ready for prom, and others just want to get in, have fun, and hit the after-parties. Viola Hastings from She’s The Man is 100% the latter, so she’d be an ideal date for those who aren’t about wasting time on traditions but rather just want to enjoy the night.

Worst: Joey Donner, ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ (1999)

Worst: Joey Donner, ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ (1999)
Touchstone Pictures

Unfortunately, at least one person in every high school is a Joey Donner. An egotistical idiot who is only a decade or so from being the subject of a Netflix documentary about a good-looking guy who managed to dupe women out of money. Joey Donner proved in 10 Things I Hate About You that, in this world, it’s all about Joey, so if one happened to go to prom with him, the entire night would be about him, and who wants an unbalanced prom night?

Best: Ferris Bueller, ‘Ferris Bueller's Day Off’ (1986)

Best: Ferris Bueller, ‘Ferris Bueller's Day Off’ (1986)
Paramount Pictures

Who doesn’t want to go to prom with someone who can turn anything into a grand event?

Worst: Hilary Faye Stockard, ‘Saved!’ (2004)

Worst: Hilary Faye Stockard, ‘Saved!’ (2004)
United Artists

In Saved!, Hilary Faye Stockard went out of her way to plan the perfect prom. From the decor to getting her favorite Christian band to play. She also did the absolute most to ensure that some of her classmates wouldn’t even be allowed on school property. So she isn’t really what one would want from a date if honesty were a date requirement.

Best: Andie Walsh, ‘Pretty in Pink’ (1986)

Best: Andie Walsh, ‘Pretty in Pink’ (1986)
Paramount Pictures

Andie Walsh in Pretty in Pink was resourceful and unwilling to let the rudest people in her life ruin her night. That’s the sign of a dream prom date.

Worst: Danny Zuko, ‘Grease’ (1978)

Worst: Danny Zuko, ‘Grease’ (1978)
Paramount Pictures

Danny Zuko comes off as insanely cool, but underneath that leather jacket is a ball of insecurity. He cares too much about what his friends think, which means that come prom night, he would not care about his date's needs but if his friends were having a good time. Not to mention that one argument before prom and before one knows it, their former date is showing up with a woman who clearly graduated from high school a good decade and a half earlier.

Best: Ronald Clifford, ‘Cruel Intentions’ (1999)

Best: Ronald Clifford, ‘Cruel Intentions’ (1999)
Sony Pictures

There are a lot of questionably moral individuals in Cruel Intentions, but Ronald Clifford stood far away from them. He was a good guy wrapped up with some bad people, but overall, in another life, he would’ve made the sweetest date on earth due to his kind heart.

Worst: Jason “J.D.” Dean, ‘Heathers’ (1988)

Worst: Jason “J.D.” Dean, ‘Heathers’ (1988)
New World Pictures

Don’t let the cute smile be a distraction because if there is one type of person one should never share a limo ride with, it’s a homicidal maniac.

11 of 21

Best: Simon Spier, ‘Love, Simon’ (2018)

Best: Simon Spier, ‘Love, Simon’ (2018)
20th Century Fox

It may be a game of cat and mouse getting Simon Spier to be one’s prom date, but once all was out in the open, it’d be one romantic adventure after the next.

Worst: Regina George, ‘Mean Girls’ (2004)

Worst: Regina George, ‘Mean Girls’ (2004)
Paramount Pictures

Did Regina George have some redemption at the end of Mean Girls? Yes. However, that doesn’t make up for the chaos she caused getting there. That drama would never be worth it, even if it meant going with the Queen Bee.

Best: Cher Horowitz, ‘Clueless’ (1995)

Best: Cher Horowitz, ‘Clueless’ (1995)
Paramount Pictures

Those who lacked fashion sense could be reassured in going with Cher Horowitz from Clueless because if she had that wild closet for just herself, imagine what she could've cooked up to have her date looking their best!

Worst: John Bender, ‘The Breakfast Club’ (1985)

Worst: John Bender, ‘The Breakfast Club’ (1985)
Universal Studios

Everyone in The Breakfast Club came with their own set of issues, so this isn’t at all about John Bender’s home life. No way! The only reason he’d be a bad prom date is there is a good chance he’d wind up figuring he was just too cool for it and leave his date waiting all night.

Best: Landon Carter, ‘A Walk to Remember’ (2002)

Best: Landon Carter, ‘A Walk to Remember’ (2002)
Warner Bros.

There is only one teen movie lead that could make it possible for his date to be at two proms at the same time. Those who know, know. For those who don’t, it’s time to grab several boxes of tissues and watch A Walk to Remember for the first time.

16 of 21

Worst: Donnie Darko, ‘Donnie Darko’ (2001)

Worst: Donnie Darko, ‘Donnie Darko’ (2001)
Pandora Cinema

The ideal prom date probably isn’t the one dealing with seeing a giant, grotesque bunny rabbit.

Best: Carrie White, ‘Carrie’ (1976)

Best: Carrie White, ‘Carrie’ (1976)
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer

For those thinking, wait, wait, wait. Didn’t Carrie White’s prom night go off the rails? Yes, but that’s only because people did her wrong. Before that, Carrie was fine and dandy. Plus, it’s always nice to have a date that can and will have one’s back in the most extreme way possible if anyone tries to come for them.

Worst: Padgett Sawyer, ‘He’s All That’ (2021)

Worst: Padgett Sawyer, ‘He’s All That’ (2021)
Netflix

Padgett Sawyer in He’s All That is the daughter of the beloved Laney Boggs from She’s All That. That may swing some to think she’d be a great date, but sadly, being an influencer may make one’s prom night all about creating profitable content and not precious memories.

19 of 21

Best: Napoleon Dynamite, ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ (2004)

Best: Napoleon Dynamite, ‘Napoleon Dynamite’ (2004)
Fox Searchlight Pictures

On the outside, Napoleon Dynamite is not the most traditional heartthrob one would pine over, but that’s where one has to learn never to judge a book by its cover. Napoleon is a one-of-a-kind gem who knows how to compliment in the most unique of ways. Plus, those moves? Untouchable.

Worst: Chase Hammond, ‘Drive Me Crazy’ (1999)

Worst: Chase Hammond, ‘Drive Me Crazy’ (1999)
20th Century Fox

There was an entire journey Chase Hammond had to go through in Drive Me Crazy. If one did not have time to join Chase on said journey, he’d be the same guy at the start of the film, and frankly, that’s not the guy one wants to hold their hand come prom.

Best: Preston Meyers, ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ (1998)

Best: Preston Meyers, ‘Can’t Hardly Wait’ (1998)
Columbia Pictures

Preston Meyers may take the longest time to ask his date to prom because of nerves, but when he did, it’d be the most heartfelt promposal worth every second of the wait.
