The 20 best binge watches of 2019

It's 2019, there's too much TV, and the streaming services really don't make it easy when they drop all episodes of just one show at the same time. But the point is the binge-watching experience, and while there are some bad ones, there are also some good ones. (There are a lot of good ones, but the cutoff was 20.)

Note: Last year, this didn't include streaming episodes that aired week to week. It does now.

"You," Season 2 (Netflix)

"You," Season 2 (Netflix)
Beth Dubber/Netflix

This season actually doesn't drop until Boxing Day, Dec. 26. But trust me. Just trust me. Definitely "Best Binge Watch" material.

"Dead to Me," Season 1 (Netflix)

"Dead to Me," Season 1 (Netflix)
Saeed Adyani / Netflix

Christmas truly came early when Netflix dropped "Dead to Me" in May. Christina Applegate, back from semi-retirement, reminded us all how great she is and how great it is working with Linda Cardellini, which we didn't even know we wanted until it happened. Plus, James Marsden not playing the nice guy for once? It worked. It really, really worked.

"Russian Doll," Season 1 (Netflix)

"Russian Doll," Season 1 (Netflix)
Netflix

One of the best new shows of 2019 is also one of the best binge watches. That makes sense because it's a TV show that understands the best types of episodes are the "Groundhog Day"-style ones.

4 of 20

"The Good Fight," Season 3 (CBS All Access)

"The Good Fight," Season 3 (CBS All Access)
Elizabeth Fisher/CBS

The third season of "The Good Fight" made some strange choices (like Michael Sheen's Al Pacino...impression?), but it remained one of the best shows on television. And while it aired week to week, "The Good Fight" (like "The Good Wife") honestly plays quite well on binge watch.

5 of 20

"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," Season 4, Part 2 (Netflix)

"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," Season 4, Part 2 (Netflix)
Eric Liebowitz/Netflix

Do yourself a favor: Don't see Tom Hooper's "Cats." Instead, just watch the final episodes of "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt," as Titus' "Cats" arc tells you everything you need to know about the horny feline musical.

"This Way Up," Season 1 (Hulu)

"This Way Up," Season 1 (Hulu)
Hulu

Aisling Bea actually starred in two streaming series this year: Netflix's "Living With Yourself" (alongside Paul Rudd and...Paul Rudd) and Hulu's "This Way Up." But she also created the latter, which was honestly the better binge watch experience (and the binge watch experience that had a lot more forward momentum, to be perfectly honest).

7 of 20

"Daybreak" (Netflix)

"Daybreak" (Netflix)
Ursula Coyote/Netflix

Unfortunately, "Daybreak" got only one season to show off its genre-bending approach to the teen drama (and post-apocalyptic stories)...but it was definitely an enjoyable one season!

"I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson," Season 1 (Netflix)

"I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson," Season 1 (Netflix)
Netflix

"I Think You Should Leave..." is the type of sketch comedy show you either love or hate. Luckily, the episodes are short enough that you can decide pretty quickly. And if you can't, it's still short enough that it's a quick binge watch.

9 of 20

"Astronomy Club," Season 1 (Netflix)

"Astronomy Club," Season 1 (Netflix)
Lara Solanki/Netflix

2019 was a great year for sketch comedy, and Netflix's "Astronomy Club" closed out the year strong. Basically, if you want to binge watch a quick sketch show, you have good options.

10 of 20

"PEN15," Season 1 (Hulu)

"PEN15," Season 1 (Hulu)
Alex Lombardi/Hulu

Relive your middle school (and the year 2000) awkwardness when you binge watch Hulu's "PEN15"

11 of 20

"Fleabag," Season 2 (Amazon Video)

"Fleabag," Season 2 (Amazon Video)
Amazon

One of the best series of 2019, if not the best series of 2019, was "Fleabag" in its second and final season. And it brought us the original Baby Yoda: Hot Priest. If you somehow still haven't binge watched "Fleabag" — and yes, it can be a lot to take, especially the first season — get on that ASAP.

12 of 20

"Dickinson," Season 1 (Apple TV+)

"Dickinson," Season 1 (Apple TV+)
Apple

Simultaneously funny, poignant, and heartbreaking, "Dickinson" (aka "Emily Dickinson Who F***s") is arguably the best show to come out of Apple TV+.

13 of 20

"Lucifer," Season 4 (Netflix)

"Lucifer," Season 4 (Netflix)
John P. Fleenor/Netflix

The move from Fox to Netflix honestly worked a miracle for "Lucifer." The show was already good — often great — but it hit a whole other level once moving to the streaming and binging model. Honestly, just binge watch this season on a loop until the fifth and final season premieres.

14 of 20

"Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television*," Season 2 (YouTube Premium)

"Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television*," Season 2 (YouTube Premium)
YouTube

"Ryan Hansen..." deserved far more viewership and praise — especially for YouTube Premium — than it got during its two-season run. But the fact that it didn't get any of that actually made the self-deprecating and meta humor of the show work even more.

15 of 20

"Unbelievable" (Netflix)

"Unbelievable" (Netflix)
Beth Dubber/Netflix

Definitely not the most fun binge watch on this list, but it's certainly one of the most emotionally affecting and gripping.

16 of 20

"Doom Patrol," Season 1 (DC Universe)

"Doom Patrol," Season 1 (DC Universe)
DC Universe

Shows like "Doom Patrol" and "DC's Legends of Tomorrow" serve as reminders that when comic book shows goes all in on the "why the f*** not" mentality, everyone wins. The only downside is having to watch that mentality week to week...until right now.

17 of 20

"Veronica Mars," Season 4 (Hulu)

"Veronica Mars," Season 4 (Hulu)
Richard Foreman/Hulu

Say what you will about the big bang at the end, but until that, it's still another (and most likely, the last) season of "Veronica Mars." And this season was created to be binge watched.

18 of 20

"Dollface," Season 1 (Hulu)

"Dollface," Season 1 (Hulu)
Ali Goldstein/Hulu

You know, you can also stream all of "Man Seeking Woman" on Hulu. But if you want something similar but new, "Dollface" fits that bill. And it does so with a great ensemble.

19 of 20

"Looking For Alaska" (Hulu)

"Looking For Alaska" (Hulu)
Alfonso Bresciani/Hulu

If you're in the mood for an old school teen drama — not supernatural stuff, no serial killers, just a killer soundtrack — then "Looking For Alaska" is for you.

20 of 20

"Shrill," Season 1 (Hulu)

"Shrill," Season 1 (Hulu)
Allyson Riggs/Hulu

Sure, you can see Lil' Baby Aidy on "Saturday Night Live" on a weekly basis, but Hulu's "Shrill" put her front and center in the lead role. Non-stop Aidy B when you binge watch.

Despite her mother's wishes, LaToya Ferguson is a writer living in Los Angeles. If you want to talk The WB's image campaigns circa 1999-2003, LaToya's your girl.
