There is no question as to who is the most iconic Disney character, and that’s Mickey Mouse himself. Synonymous with the Disney name, Mickey has been the longtime face and mascot of the company, with some even calling it the "Mouse House" as a result. From his multiple TV shows, starring role in Fantasia, and presence at every Disney-themed park, Mickey has a silhouette that anyone can recognize and remains one of the most beloved cartoon characters ever. 

When Frozen was released in 2013, it quickly became a worldwide phenomenon. You practically couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the song ‘Let It Go’, which Elsa passionately belts out in the film. With her long white braid and sparkling blue gown, Elsa soon became the most popular Disney princess ever. From dolls to clothes, Elsa was everywhere, with her popularity only rivaled by her sister Anna and Olaf the snowman. It’s safe to say Frozen fans have still not let Elsa go. 

Disney’s very first princess also appeared in the studio’s first full-length animated feature in 1937, making Snow White a historic Disney character. Adapted from the classic Brothers Grimm fairytale, Disney’s version of Snow White has become the most recognizable iteration of the character, complete with her signature dark bob, red bow, and blue and yellow dress. She also laid out the blueprint for every Disney princess ballad, with the song ‘Someday My Princess Will Come’.

Disney’s Lilo & Stitch may have been released all the way back in 2002, but Stitch is still as popular as ever. The strange yet adorable alien has remained a fan favorite over the years, and probably has the most merchandise out of any Disney character. Think of any item or product, and there is most likely a Stitch version available somewhere. With his unique voice, mischievous personality, and big heart, it is hard not to love Stitch. 

When it comes to movie mermaids, there is none more iconic than the fun-loving and curious Ariel from The Little Mermaid. She’s a rebellious spirit with a thirst for adventure, longing to explore the human world and break free from the sea. Her fiery red hair is her trademark, as well as her green tail and purple shell bra. ‘Part of Your World’ remains one of the most moving and emotional Disney princess ballads, perfectly encapsulating Ariel’s desire for more. 

“To infinity and beyond!” is the phrase that Buzz Lightyear made famous in the original Toy Story. When we first meet Buzz, he believes he is a real space ranger and is unaware that he is a toy. His green, purple, and white space suit is a key physical component of his character, as well as his heroism and courage. He is, of course, nothing without his best friend Woody, who initially start out as enemies, but then find a friend in each other. 

Mickey Mouse’s female counterpart and girlfriend, Minnie Mouse, is without a doubt the world’s second most famous mouse. With her custom bow and polka dots, Minnie is the epitome of sweetness and has become a fashion icon in her own right. Along with several other classic Disney characters, she has received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which she totally deserves as Disney’s primary leading lady. 

Winnie the Pooh is one of Disney’s most gentle and wholesome characters. Known for his obsession with honey (or ‘hunny’, as he spells it), Winnie lives in the Hundred Acre Wood with his friends such as Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore and Christopher Robin. He originated as a character in A. A. Milne’s children’s books, but has become a fully fleshed-out and enduring character thanks to Disney’s adaptation of the source material. 

If Snow White is Disney’s most iconic princess, Cinderella is certainly next in line. Every girl has dreamed of being Cinderella, and getting to go to the ball for one night and wear the glass slippers. Despite being treated like garbage by her evil stepmother and stepsisters, Cinderella always remained kind and decent. The scene where her Fairy Godmother transforms her into her blue ball gown is one of the most famous scenes in Disney’s animation history. 

Peter Pan might be the name of the movie, but it was really Tinker Bell who stole the show. As Peter’s feisty and sassy sidekick, she is always in his corner as he adventures through Neverland and fights Captain Hook. Despite Peter Pan being over seventy years old, Tinker Bell is still very much present in the Disney pantheon. You’ll see her glide across the sky during Disneyland’s fireworks show, or in the animated film series that made its debut in 2008.

One of Disney’s most recognizable villains is Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty . She is a wicked fairy who is known as the ‘Mistress of All Evil' and is essentially darkness personified. On Princess Aurora's sixteenth birthday, Maleficent curses Aurora to cut her finger on a spinning wheel and die. Maleficent stands out for her memorable costume and appearance, particularly her menacing horns. Angelina Jolie strikingly brought the character to life in 2014’s Maleficent. 

The standout of Pixar’s classic Finding Nemo is without a doubt the forgetful and lovable Dory. Delightfully voiced by Ellen DeGeneres, Dory has a heart of gold despite her short-term memory loss. While this can lead to trouble, she always means well. Dory became such a fan favorite that she even got her own movie with Finding Dory in 2016. Her trademark phrase “Just keep swimming!” has also become an inspirational and uplifting motto for many fans. 

While Disney is best known for its animated characters, Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise definitely ranks highly. This pirate is far from your typical hero, but somehow always manages to pull through and save the day. He’s a trickster who isn’t afraid to use other people for his own personal gain, and you never know where his loyalties lie, but it is his carefree and eccentric nature that makes him so iconic. 

The Lion King is one of Disney’s biggest movies, so it is only appropriate that the Lion King himself, Simba, appears on this list. Simba is a character who goes through a lot, losing his father Mufasa at the hands of his evil Uncle Scar and then being exiled from Pride Rock. But of course, he finds his rightful place as King in the Circle of Life. The Lion King remains one of Disney’s best films to this day, with many cats and pets being named Simba as a result. 

There’s no one more despicable in the Disney catalog than Cruella de Vil, who literally has the words cruel and devil in her name. In One Hundred and One Dalmatians, Cruella kidnaps a litter of Dalmatian puppies in order to use their skin for a fur coat. This psychotic madwoman is extremely volatile and dangerous, if the murdering puppies tendency doesn’t give it away. Despite her villainy, she remains a fashion icon known for her distinctive couture look.  

Aladdin follows the journey of its titular hero from rags to riches, but it's the Genie who steals the entire show. Thanks to Robin Williams’s comedically genius vocal performance, the Genie is a larger-than-life character who owns every scene he appears in. He doesn’t just provide the comic relief in the movie, but most of the heart through his relationship with Aladdin. 'Friend Like Me' is definitely one of Disney’s most extravagant and theatrical musical numbers. 

Goofy is another one of the very first Disney characters created alongside Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and others. As his name probably suggests, Goofy is very clumsy and dim-witted, but means well and is highly lovable. He finally got his time to shine in 1995’s A Goofy Movie, which follows him and his son Max. One of the funniest Disney discourses is the co-existence of Goofy, an anthropomorphized dog, and Pluto, an actual dog, in the same fictional world.

Out of all of the Disney princess movies, Beauty and the Beast still seems to be the most universally loved. The tale as old as time follows Belle, who falls in love with a prince transformed into a hideous beast. Belle is smart, independent, curious, and capable, making her a great role model. She’s educated and loves to get lost in a good story. Admired for her intelligence and kindness, her yellow ballgown also has to be the prettiest of all the Disney princess dresses.

Along with Looney Tunes’ Daffy Duck, Donald Duck might be the most famous cartoon duck in the world. Despite being best friends with Mickey Mouse, he couldn’t be more different. Donald is best known for his ill temper and anger management issues, and is highly likely to explode at anything. This makes for the comedic basis of many of his film and TV appearances, which often result in angry quacking. DuckTales is also a fan favorite TV show.

Every child wanted to have a nanny like Mary Poppins after the film was released in 1964. Julie Andrews plays the magical caregiver, who looks after the mischievous Banks children and helps them become closer to their banker father. She also brings fun and happiness into their lives, making even the most mundane tasks seem like a lot of fun. Later played by Emily Blunt in a sequel in 2018, Mary Poppins really is ‘supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’.
