“The Adventures of Cliff Booth” is the long-awaited follow-up to Quentin Tarantino’s most recent film, 2019’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Since Tarantino himself has other plans for his next (and last) film, the director of this follow-up will be David Fincher, who is famous for his dark and gritty thrillers (“Seven,” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” the “House of Cards” TV series). News of this film only became public about seven months ago, but already it appears that its release date may be less than a year ahead of us.

The Sequel’s Storyline – What Little We Know

If you’ve seen “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” the title of “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” should give you a good idea of what this follow-up has in store for you: more time in the company of the effortlessly cool ’60s Hollywood stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Cliff was always a lot of fun to hang out with, and Tarantino’s 2021 novelization of “Hollywood” provides even more insight into his myriad fascinating and disturbing adventures prior to the events of the film.

However, “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” will look forward rather than back, showcasing the stuntman’s exploits after his heroic deeds on that fateful night of August 8, 1969. Beyond this, only scant information exists in regard to the plot of this film. On April 5, shortly after it was announced, a film podcaster and friend of Tarantino named Sean Fennessey explained on The Big Picture podcast that this follow-up “probably should not be thought of as a sequel,” so much as an extension of its predecessor’s universe.

Fennessey provided only one other, uncertain bit of information, which he prefaced by calling it something “that I think is confirmed”: “The Adventures of Cliff Booth” will be set in 1977. The script was penned by Tarantino himself; NME reported in June that the film “is believed to be an evolution of” the screenplay for “The Movie Critic,” a project that Tarantino previously intended to direct as his final film. The only actor known to be returning from “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” is Timothy Olyphant as the real-life ’70s star James Stacy; new characters will be played by Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, to name a few.

A Netflix Film – To Be Released on the Big Screen Next Summer?

“The Adventures of Cliff Booth” is unusual for a few reasons: it’ll be the first Tarantino sequel (the two “Kill Bill” movies are really one, to be released as such this December) and the first instance in three decades (since 1996’s “From Dusk Till Dawn”) of a movie written but not directed by the pastiche auteur. And there may yet be another distinctive aspect having to do with the mere release of the film.

“The Adventures of Cliff Booth” will be a Netflix film, which would ordinarily mean that we could only hope to see its depiction of New Hollywood brought to life on our TV and laptop screens. Of late, however, the streaming titan has been showing greater interest in theatrical runs for its productions.

Moreover, AMC Theatres, the biggest theater chain in existence, seems to be warming up to Netflix. Historically, the chain has only very rarely agreed to screen Netflix films because the streaming service typically advocates for theatrical runs that are too short for AMC’s liking. Before 2025, “Glass Onion” (2022) was the only Netflix film that AMC had screened. At the end of October, however, AMC signed on to schedule Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters,” which was initially released in theaters to immense success back in August, in 300 of its venues.

And this won’t be a one-off partnership. Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming adaptation of “The Chronicles of Narnia” will also get a one-week exclusive IMAX screening at AMC’s venues, and Variety reported on October 27 that Netflix “is also contemplating a more robust rollout” for “The Adventures of Cliff Booth,” which “is eyeing a summer 2026 launch.” The two companies won’t clinch any such deal until the film’s release date is nearer, but there’s still a fair chance that we’ll get to witness the adventures of Cliff Booth in all their big-screen glory.
