The stars of Warfare bonded for life while filming, but that's not all. They also got matching tattoos for life. To celebrate the film and their brotherhood, they each got a "Call On Me" tattoo. So, what is the meaning behind the tattoo? "It’s in the beginning of the film — 'Call On Me' — it’s very symbolic. I got it right under my underwear. I think I’m never going to do a sex scene, so it’s fine. I’ll be able to hide it right there," D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai joked at a Q&A to discuss the film.
"Branded for life," Joseph Quinn joked to The Hollywood Reporter. While Michael Gandolfini says he had "no hesitancy" when it came to getting the tattoo because "every one of them changed my life," Quinn admits he and Will Poulter did have a little bit of hesitancy about the ink.
The cast also includes Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henrique Zaga, and Charles Melton.
During the movie's press tour and at the premiere, some tattoo locations were actually revealed by the actors. Connor did his on his inner arm, Centineo got one on the side of his leg, Poulter has it on the back of his calf, and Quinn's is on his ankle.
Woon-A-Tai: "I really built a brotherhood with these guys in a very small span of a few months. Other times I felt that same feeling, and it’s been years working on that project, but this was only like three months. And we got matching tattoos, which really should show you what our love for each other is."
Poulter explained to Access Hollywood, "It's a reference to the only piece of music that features in the film, and it's just a reminder that we can all be there for each other and call on each other if we need it."
"We learned how to move like the SEALs do, the terminology, military tactics, comms, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day," Melton shared regarding the three-month "immersive boot camp" that he and his castmates went through to prepare for their roles. By the end of training, they had all shaved their heads and gotten tattoos. "We all bonded, got matching tattoos."
A24's Warfare will be released in theaters on April 11.
