Today’s Epic Earworm: Billie Eilish — “You Should See Me in a Crown”

Today’s epic earworm is not one of Billie Eilish‘s biggest hits, but it is one of the ones that she and her brother Finneas had the most fun making. By the time that “You Should See Me in a Crown” was released, Eilish had already had several songs released as non-album singles, from her first EP, and from television and movie soundtracks. This track was the first single from her first full-length album, and if her goal was to make a splash, she did. While “You Should See Me in a Crown” peaked at #41 on the Billboard Hot 100, it ended up being certified double-platinum.

If the song seems creepy, it was designed to be. When talking about it, Eilish makes it clear–she wants the song and video to be terrifying. She wants people to be uneasy listening to it in a dark room. After writing so many sad songs, she wanted this one to freak people out.

Sinister Origins

The idea for “You Should See Me in a Crown” came to the brother and sister duo while watching an episode of the BBC show “Sherlock.” The episode (Season Two, Episode Three, “The Reichenbach Fall”) was one where Sherlock Holmes’ nemesis, Jim Moriarty, steals the Crown Jewels. The title of the song is a Moriarty line from the episode. The creative duo decided immediately that they had to turn the line into a song.

Eilish used the sound of her father sharpening a knife as the opening of the song. As for the accompanying video, Eilish allowed real spiders to crawl on her during filming. She even had tarantulas placed in her mouth during filming and endured spiders crawling into her ears during takes. The things that artists endure for their craft…
