To think, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" began as a self-generated pilot that was the lowest of lo-fi. That led to FX giving unproven creators a TV show that debuted in 2005. Now, it's 2025 and the 17th season of "Always Sunny" is about to arrive. You could call this: The Gang Stars in a Trailer.
The "Always Sunny" crew isn't reinventing the wheel, and to be honest the last few seasons of the show have been, at times, listless. It seems like friends keeping the show going because they want to and why would FX stand in their way? It's maybe the only show anybody watches on FXX. There is some ambition to be seen in season 17, though, as we will be seeing the second half of the crossover of "Abbott Elementary" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia."
The Gang already appeared on "Abbott Elementary," one of the only remaining successful network sitcoms, and we got to see them within the prism of that show. The world of "Always Sunny," though, is filthy and nihilistic, and it will be interesting, fascinating even, to see the "Abbott" crew in that realm.
Season 17 of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia debuts on July 9, with episodes appearing on Hulu the next day. You know, for people who don't have access to FXX/are just finding out FXX is a thing.
