"The Incredibles 3" has landed a director

A third "Incredibles" movie is in the works, but a new director will be taking over. Peter Sohn will be stepping into the big shoes of Brad Bird to handle the superhero family story.

Sohn is no stranger to Disney and Pixar. However, he also doesn't come with the best track record of success in terms of his projects. To date, Sohn has directed two Pixar movies. One was "The Good Dinosaur," a commercial disappointment for a Pixar film. His most recent was "Elemental," which also landed with, if not a thud, some oomph at the very least. Now, Sohn is being tasked with taking over for the third film in the "Incredibles" franchise, which has, thus far, been immensely successful for Pixar. No pressure.

If you dig in a bit, though, it makes total sense that Sohn has gotten the call here. As previously mentioned, Bird had been the driving force behind "The Incredibles," and he did so in a way uncommon in animation. Bird has a reputation for being specific in his vision, even exacting, both in his live-action work and his animated work. His fingerprints were all over "The Incredibles" and its sequel in a way unusual to American animated movies.

Also, Bird hasn't fallen out of Disney's good graces. He's writing the screenplay for "The Incredibles 3" and is co-producing the movie. Bird's just a busy guy right now, with his movie "Ray Gunn" in pre-production. Sohn had previously worked on not just the first two "Incredibles" movies, but also Bird's breakthrough feature "The Iron Giant." He was hand-selected to direct "The Incredibles 3" with Bird's blessing.

With a Bird-penned screenplay in hand and the name "Incredibles" attached to the project, it is safe to assume this will be Sohn's most-successful directorial effort once it hits theaters.
