The next "Yellowstone" show is situated after the "1923" series finale

The latest chapter in the "Yellowstone" saga has come to a conclusion. After the Kevin Costner-starring show became an unexpected phenomenon, Paramount was quick to start making spinoff shows (and also to give Taylor Sheridan the freedom to create every single show he's ever thought about for even a couple seconds).

The first of these shows was "1883," an old-timey Western. That was followed by "1923," which just dropped its supersized series finale. The next step in the process is now in the works and the finale of "1923" has helped set up what is to come.

It had already been announced that the next "Yellowstone" prequel show would be "1944," playing this generation of the Dutton family story right in the midst of World War II. Where "1923" left things, the expectation is that the main character of "1944" will be John Dutton II, the father of Costner's John Dutton III in the show that started this whole empire. The character would be 21 in 1944, hence the presumption.

While not every character from "1923" was left canonically alive at the end of the series, one who was is Spencer Dutton, father of John II. Brandon Sklenar, who played Spencer on "1923," says he is open to reprising the role on "1944." While that is something he is interested in doing, he'd need some aging makeup to make that work. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren's character would only be able to appear in flashback scenes, but even given that, one assumes they're a bit busy all things considered (though Mirren clearly loves to work based on her schedule).

On top of that, a "Yellowstone" spinoff is coming as well. "The Madison" stars Michelle Pfeiffer and focuses on a different family from the Duttons. It can't be all Duttons, all the time for Taylor Sheridan.

So, keep an eye out for "1944" in the near future, and then keep an eye out for an aged-up Sklenar as Spencer Dutton when the time comes.
