Stephen King’s The Running Man, published under his pseudonym Richard Bachman, first arrived in book stores in 1982. His dystopian tale about a world with a collapsing economy and an abundance of violence then came to the big screen in a 1987 adaptation starring Arnold Schwarzenegger . Now director Edgar Wright is ready to introduce a new generation to King’s deadly gameshow. And the first explosive trailer for his star-studded take on The Running Man puts Glen Powell’s Ben Richards into a reality series we’re not sure anyone can actually survive.
This first trailer for Wright’s The Running Man makes clear this version is a lot closer to its source material than the previous movie adaptation. Powell’s Ben Richards is not falsely imprisoned and forced to participate in the game like Schwarzenegger’s iteration of the character. Instead, he volunteers to play because of the broken world he lives in.
In addition to the trailer, here is The Running Man‘s official synopsis from Paramount Pictures:
In a near-future society, The Running Man is the top-rated show on television—a deadly competition where contestants, known as Runners, must survive 30 days while being hunted by professional assassins, with every move broadcast to a bloodthirsty public and each day bringing a greater cash reward. Desperate to save his sick daughter, working-class Ben Richards is convinced by the show’s charming but ruthless producer, Dan Killian (Josh Brolin), to enter the game as a last resort. But Ben’s defiance, instincts, and grit turn him into an unexpected fan favorite—and a threat to the entire system. As ratings skyrocket, so does the danger, and Ben must outwit not just the Hunters, but a nation addicted to watching him fall.
Gee. Do you think that sly producer for the billion-dollar corporation really did rig his deadly gameshow that exploits the poor, as this trailer for The Running Man suggests? Who could even think of such a horrible reality?!?!
…..Anyway, in addition to Powell and Brolin the incredible cast also features William H. Macy, Lee Pace, Emilia Jones, Katy O’Brian, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, and Colman Domingo. We daresay that Colman Domingo absolutely steals the show in The Running Man trailer. The Running Man will begin this latest version of its deadly game on November 7, 2025.
