The Russo Brothers give an exciting update on Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom

It's safe to say that Marvel fans are excited for Avengers: Doomsday , the first reason being that Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the franchise, not as Iron Man, but as Victor Von Doom. The news was first revealed back at Comic Con last year.

Another reason is that the film, which is currently set to come out in May 2026, is directed by fan favorites Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously did Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

Downey has played the role of Tony Stark since 2008 with his character tragically dying in Avengers: Endgame. The role of Doctor Doom, known as the Fantastic Four villain, has previously been played by Joseph Culp in the 1994 unreleased version, Julian McMahon in Fantastic Four (2005) and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), and Toby Kebbell in the 2015 remake.

Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach will be the next group of actors to bring the Fantastic Four to life in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which comes out July 25.

In an interview with ET, the directors were asked about how the actor is developing his version of the iconic villain.

Joe Russo: He's so immersed in it. He is so dialed in. He's writing backstory, costume ideas, I mean, he's really - we were just on the phone with him this morning before we got here talking about it.

Anthony Russo: That's the kind of artist he is. That's the kind of actor he is.

Naturally, both had nothing but praise for him and were seemingly very excited to reunite with Downey. "He just loves really rich three-dimensional characters and I think he sees a real opportunity here with that character," Joe Russo had concluded.
