While promoting Netflix's The Electric State, The Russo Brothers spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about all things Marvel, even going back to when their agent called them about Captain America: Civil War.
Anthony Russo: 'Marvel has a list of 10 directors that they want to talk to about the next Captain America movie, and you guys are on it.' That was unbelievable to us. They just were meeting with people who were doing interesting things. They didn’t even let us read the script until after the first meeting. Over those two months, the movie kind of took over our lives. We fell in love with it, and we were doing storyboards. We were rewriting scenes just to show them tonally what we would do. We created an animatic, to give them an idea of tone and texture, and we finally won."
As for Avengers: Doomsday, that will be the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that the brothers and AGBO will produce. When it was revealed that the Russo Brothers were set to return for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, the directors wrote on Instagram, "The first comic book run we ever read. The book that made us fall in love with comics... filled with all of our favorite characters."
When asked if they still use the "now-famous set of baseball cards" that included a card for every Marvel actor and how many movies they were contracted for, Anthony Russo confirmed that they do continue to use them.
Joe Russo added, "Now they have magnets on them so we can put ‘em on a board and look at ‘em. It’s the only way to keep track of the amount of characters that we’re working with."
Anthony Russo: As far as how do we look at who’s in the movies, it’s just a long creative process of exploring where we want to take the story. What is the most surprising and exciting area for us to push into, and which characters help us in that effort?
Avengers: Doomsday is currently scheduled to release in 2026.
