They are trying again with making "Street Fighter" into a movie success. It's a good time for it, what with the rise of video game movies. Suddenly, they are actually viable, and even thriving. Well, at least the one's that tap into people's childhoods, and "Street Fighter" is a fighting game, so it can't quite be as safe and unremarkable as "A Minecraft Movie." We previously noted that names such as Jason Momoa and Roman Reigns have become attached to the movie, though in unknown roles. Now, another actor is reportedly in the film, and while she isn't as big of a name as Momoa or Reigns, she's reportedly in line for a key "Street Fighter" role: Chun-Li.
Callina Liang is evidently stepping into the role of Chun-Li for "Street Fighter." She's not a well-known commodity, but probably most well-known for her role in Steven Soderbergh's "Presence."
Chun-Li is one of the preeminent "Street Fighter" characters, and certainly the most-significant female character in the world of the games. In fact, after the lackluster 1994 "Street Fighter" film, the next foray into live-action adaptation was "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li." That 2009 movie is considered particularly bad, even for a video game adaptation. In fact, it was such a cinematic cesspool there isn't even an official channel to see the trailer for the movie on YouTube.
It's almost certain that this film will be better than "Legend of Chun-Li," and besting the 1994 movie won't be difficult either. To what degree Laing is good casting remains to be seen, but if Soderbergh sees something in her, she probably has the goods.
