AMC’s not done with the apocalypse just yet. The Walking Dead: Dead City has officially been renewed for a third season, and yes, Maggie and Negan’s twisted partnership is far from over. Filming of The Walking Dead is set to kick off in fall 2025, with Boston once again standing in for a wrecked, overgrown Manhattan.
This renewal adds another layer to AMC’s ever-expanding Walking Dead universe, which now includes spinoffs like Daryl Dixon and The Ones Who Live. Zombies (and complicated ex-villains) still pull solid ratings.
One of the biggest shakeups heading into Season 3? The show’s getting a new boss. Seth Hoffman, who wrote for the original Walking Dead during its much-loved seasons 4 through 6, is taking over as showrunner. He’s stepping in for series creator Eli Jorné, who earned props from AMC brass for building the gritty tone of the first two seasons.
With Hoffman in charge, expect things to get even darker and more layered. Word is, we’ll be meeting some new power players too, like the New Babylon Federation and the Dama, both of whom bring serious threats to whatever fragile peace Maggie and Negan are trying to piece together.
No premiere date just yet, but if the timeline holds, Season 3 should drop sometime in mid-to-late 2026.
As for the plot? It looks like Maggie and Negan’s shaky alliance will be tested more than ever. They’re trying to carve out something that resembles a community from the ruins of Manhattan, but of course, this is The Walking Dead, so nothing comes easy. Between new enemies and unresolved baggage (hello, trauma!), survival’s only getting trickier.
Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan are both set to return, and if the past two seasons are any indication, fans can expect more emotional gut punches and morally messy choices.
