Toss a coin out for your Witcher! The mega-popular fantasy series is returning to Netflix much sooner than you think. And this time, the titular Witcher will not be played by Henry Cavill. There are big changes afoot for The Witcher Season 4, but this next batch of episodes is not a reboot. It's also not the end of the series, either.
Here's what to know about the release date, plot, and new star actor for The Witcher Season 4. No spoilers ahead.
The Witcher Season 4 hits Netflix on October 30, 2025. This will be an old-school Netflix drop, meaning all eight episodes of the new season will be available to binge at the same time. This is a change from Season 3, which aired in two parts in 2023. Yes, it's been two years since the last Witcher season!
Since 2019, the titular Witcher — a monster hunter named Geralt who possesses great magic — has been played by Henry Cavill. However, in 2022, Cavill stepped down from the show, making The Witcher Season 3 his last moments in the role. Now, his replacement is here in the form of Liam Hemsworth, brother of Chris Hemsworth, and the guy who carried us through the original Hunger Games movies.
"It’s an odd thing to be asked to come in midway through a series like this and continue on as the lead character," Hemsworth said in an October 7 interview published by Netflix. "But, as a fan of the video game, I felt like I could do something cool with it.”
Hemsworth's passion for video games gives him something in common with the previous Witcher; Cavill was a huge fan of the games, too, specifically The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, released back in 2015. “I’m a bit of a secret gamer,” Hemsworth told Netflix. "It was a bit of those pinch-yourself moments of walking around in this costume that a few years ago I was playing a video game of.”
On October 7, just a few weeks before Season 4 debuts, Netflix released the full trailer for The Witcher Season 4. Picking up where Season 3 left off, Geralt (Hemsworth) is joining forces with his companions on a quest to find Ciri (Freya Allan). This means that a good portion of Season 4 will have some of the beloved characters split up, and on separate quests.
The Witcher Season 4 and Season 5 are being filmed back-to-back, and combined, all the episodes will adapt the events from the last three Witcher novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. This includes:
If this all happens the way that Sapkowski wrote it, it means that Season 5 could end with Ciri meeting Sir Galahad of the Authrain legend, and some massive death and destruction ahead for Geralt. We don't know if the series will end the same way the books end, but if Season 4 sticks to just Baptism of Fire and The Tower of the Swallow, we should expect the eight episodes to end in a big cliffhanger involving Ciri, a straight-up alternate dimension.
