Timothee Chalamet is a ping pong machine in the trailer for "Marty Supreme"

We already got the trailer for 'The Smashing Machine', the (likely) Oscar contender from Benny Safdie about a niche athlete. Now comes the trailer for 'Marty Supreme', the (likely) Oscar contender from Josh Safdie… also about a niche athlete. That’s right — for 2025, the Safdie brothers have gone their separate ways, each making their own movie, and now they’re set to go head-to-head.

For a moment early in the trailer, we thought, “Wow, did one of the Safdies actually make a movie that feels kind of light?” Then the rest of the trailer happened — and, yeah, of course not. It might not be 'Uncut Gems', but 'Marty Supreme' doesn’t look like a rollicking romp either. It does, however, look… intriguing.

Timothée Chalamet, fresh off nearly becoming the youngest Best Actor winner in Oscars history (until Adrien Brody held the line), plays an elite ping pong — or table tennis, if we’re being proper about it — player with plenty going on beneath the surface. Gwyneth Paltrow co-stars as, apparently, an actress. And Kevin O’Leary, aka “Mr. Wonderful” from 'Shark Tank', turns up in an actual acting role. That’s peak Safdie energy right there.

Chalamet tends to favor late-December releases, a solid move for an Oscar play. 'Marty Supreme' lands right on Christmas Day — so after unwrapping presents, you can go watch Chalamet smash forehands.
